GRAMBLING, La. ? The ULM women's soccer team couldn't overcome a pair of early Grambling State goals, falling in a physical match 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Lady Tiger Soccer Field in Grambling, La.
“After the first 15 minutes I thought we played a good game,” ULM soccer head coach Stacy Lamb said. “We made silly mistakes in the beginning and gave away to easy goals that came back to get us in the end.”
Grambling State (2-1) got a quick strike early, scoring after a free kick in the game's fourth minute. The Tigers extended the lead to 2-0 after Ashley Baker scored at the 13:09 mark.
The Tigers first goal snapped a scoreless streak by sophomore goalkeeper Mallory George that covered 222:02 minutes and dated back to ULM's game against South Alabama on Oct. 22, 2006.
The ULM (1-1) defense settled in after the second score and allowed only five shots over the final 75 minutes of the match, including only one in the second half. The Warhawk offense put together several scoring chances in the first half, but couldn't convert.
“We had our chances in this one,” Lamb said. “We were able to convert on one chance, but we had several opportunities. We need to learn how to finish our one-on-one or penalty kick opportunities.”
The Warhawks finally got on the scoreboard in the second half after sophomore Sara Islas powered her way through the Tiger defense in the 58th-minute for her second goal of the season. Islas was set up on the goal by freshman Elena Vazquez's first assist of her collegiate career.
The Warhawks open the home portion of their schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 5 when they play host to the Ladies of Centenary at the ULM Soccer Complex at 4 p.m.
