DENTON, Texas ? The ULM women's soccer team couldn't overcome a rough first half, falling at perennial league-power North Texas by a 7-0 score in both team's conference opener at the North Texas Soccer Complex in Denton on Friday night.
“You can't make that many mistakes that early and expect to come back from,” ULM soccer head coach Stacy Lamb said. “North Texas is a good team. They are strong and fast and came out ready to play tonight. That being said, I thought we had good chances to score, but put ourselves in too deep a hole early.”
The Mean Green (7-2, 1-0 Sun Belt) picked up two goals in the first seven minutes and stormed out to a 6-0 lead by intermission.
ULM (4-6, 0-1 Sun Belt) settled in after that, holding the North Texas starting attackers to one goal in the second half.
The Warhawks were out shot in the match by a 26-9 margin, including a 17-3 advantage in shots against goal for the Mean Green. Sophomore goalkeeper Mallory George collected 10 saves to push her league-leading total to 56.
“We knew coming in that this would be a very intense and very difficult weekend,” Lamb said. “We are playing the top two teams in our conference right out of the gate. Tonight's game is behind us and we need to focus on Denver.”
The Warhawks return to the pitch on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they face preseason Sun Belt Conference favorite Denver at Pioneer Field. The Pioneers (3-2-3, 0-0-1 Sun Belt) are coming off a 0-0 tie against Louisiana-Lafayette.
