JONESBORO, Ark.?Arkansas State
held off a ULM
rally to defeat the Warhawks 3-1 (30-12, 30-18, 28-30, 30-21) Sunday afternoon
in Sun Belt volleyball play. Christin
Baker led the Indians with 16 kills, while Johanna Spreen led a balanced ULM attack with eight
kills.
Nine ULM
(0-17, 0-4 SBC) players recorded a kill in the match and seven tallied three of
more. Jessica Ayodele and Ilima Sam Fong
each had six and Stephanie Wardach added five.
Arkansas
State (6-11, 2-3) had
four players in double-figures in the kill column with Mago Joelle tallying 12,
while Robin Aaron and Mandy DeWalt each added 11 to go along with Baker's 16.
The Indians jumped out 16-3 in the opening game before
taking the game 30-12 hitting .688 in the game with 11 kills and no
errors.
Game two opened similarly with ASU taking a 9-3 lead out of
the gate. The Warhawks battled back and
pulled with three at 17-14 on a kill by Ashley Onley. ULM scored on four-straight serves by Sam Fong in the rally. The Indians scored 13 of the final 17 points
in the game to pull away and take the game.
ULM
stormed out of the break and took a 5-0 lead in game three riding the serve of Spreen. Arkansas
State fought back and
took a 14-10 lead before the Warhawks rolled off a 10-0 run taking a 22-15 lead
once again on the serve by Spreen. With
the game tied 28-28, the Warhawk defense forced Arkansas State
into a pair of attack errors to win their first game in the Sun Belt season.
Arkansas
State broke open a 16-16
tie in game four with a 7-3 run taking a 23-19 lead. The Indians closed the game scoring seven of
the final nine points to take the game and the match.
ULM continues Sun Belt play
next weekend with a tour of Alabama stopping
in Mobile on Friday for a match with South
Alabama and then a trip to Troy
on Sunday.
