MONROE, La. --- The ULM women's soccer team used a stifling defensive performance and a goal from sophomore Sara Islas to put away the Ladies of Centenary College in the home opening match at the ULM Soccer Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
The ULM (2-1) defense led by sophomore goalkeeper Mallory George kept the Ladies off balance all afternoon. Centenary (1-2) managed only five total shots in the game as George picked up her second shutout of the year and recorded a season-high four saves.
"We are pleased with the result," ULM soccer head coach Stacy Lamb said. "We did a lot of things well today. Mallory [George] had a great game in goal and is definitely getting better with each game. We have to keep improving though and get ready for the tough games coming up."
The Warhawks received the game winner early when Islas took a free kick from junior Rachel Hobson and slid it past CC goalkeeper Ali Hilsher for her third score of the season. Islas' goal came just under the 12-minute mark and was her second game-winner of the year.
ULM added an insurance goal halfway through the second half. Freshman Elena Vazquez tallied her first career goal for the Warhawks in the 74th minute. Vazquez was assisted on the goal by senior Megan Theriot.
ULM returns to action on Friday night when they travel to Tulsa, Okla. to take on the Golden Eagles of Oral Roberts University. The meeting will be the first between the two schools and the opening game of the 2007 OSU Invitational Tournament.
"It is fun coming off a win, but we know that we have a big weekend coming up," Lamb said. "Playing Oral Roberts and Oklahoma State give us a good chance to see where we match up against some of the better teams in our region and nationally."
