MONROE,
La. --- Freshman setter Helen Theisen had a career day assisting on 35 kills, but
it wasn't enough as the Warhawk volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-16, 25-13,
25-23) match to South Alabama Sunday afternoon in the ULM Activity Center.
On
the USA (8-8, 2-5 Sun Belt) front row, Juliana Almeida smashed 14 kills. ULM
(1-19, 0-6) senior Johanna Spreen led the Warhawks with 10 kills and sophomore
Christy Tribble was the lone player in the match with double-digit digs (13).
A
service error by South Alabama's' Lindsay Schwartz followed by a service error
on the part of freshman Meghan McCoy put the lead in USA's favor 4-3. Both
teams traded the lead before the Jangaurs' eventually took a 19-11 lead off a
pair of Warhawk attacking errors. The set went back-and-forth before USA took
it, 25-16.
ULM
led early in set two before a pair of Samia Salomao service aces pushed the
lead in the Jaguars' favor 8-5. South Alabama continued to increase the lead with
a 12-3 run keyed by three kills by Almeida. Finding themselves down 20-9, The
Warhawks were unable to reduce the deficit and fell 25-13 in the frame.
The
Warhawks came out in set three attacking early off a pair of Mahogany Dilonga
kills to take a 7-3 lead. Finding themselves down four the Jaguars' fought back
off five Warhawk errors and tipped the lead in their favor 12-8. ULM would make
one final run at USA and tie the third set 20-20. After exchanging attacking
errors the Warhawks followed up with another by Spreen. The Jaguars' finished
with a 3-2 run taking the match.
The
Warhawk volleyball team hosts the Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette Tuesday
with “Pack the Gym Night” in Fant-Ewing Coliseum at 7 p.m.
