MONROE, La. ? South Alabama used a pair of early goals to coast to a 4-1 victory over the Warhawk soccer team at the ULM Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon.
USA (5-10-2, 3-4-2 Sun Belt) got a pair of goals and an assist from freshman Brandi Smith, her 11th and 12th on the season. Smith's first goal, a one-on-one shot against junior keeper Mallory George came in the game's second minute.
Cortney Stewart gave the Jaguars the game-winning score in the 19th minute after Smith sent a pass through the ULM defense.
ULM (4-11-1, 1-7-1 Sun Belt) had many chances in the first, owning a 5-2 advantage in corners and an 8-5 advantage in shots, but couldn't produce a goal.
The Warhawks finished the game with a 12-7 advantage in corners and a 17-14 advantage in shots, but it wasn't until senior Jeana Chesnik found the back of the net in the 88th minute that ULM was able to put a score on the board. Senior Kendall Dawkins launched a corner into the box that Chesnik collected inside the six and beat Jaguar keeper Katie Berry.
The Warhawks will look to close the home portion of the season with a win on Sunday when they host Troy at 1 p.m. ULM will honor its senior class in a ceremony before the game.
