JONESBORO,
Ark. ?
Junior Raydan Phillips gave the ULM soccer team an early lead, but a late goal
in regulation allowed Arkansas State to force a 1-1 tie in Jonesboro, Ark. on
Sunday afternoon.
ULM (4-6-1, 1-2-1 Sun Belt) didn't let a lot
of time run off the game clock before tallying the score. In the match's third
minute senior Kendall Dawkins connected with Phillips who scored from 20 yards
out for the early 1-0 lead.
In stark contrast to Friday night's loss at
UALR in which the Warhawks had 14 shots on frame, the ULM offense stalled on
Sunday. The Warhawks attempted only six total shots, including four coming on
target.
“We are obviously upset about the result
today,” ULM head coach Stacy Lamb said. “We scored the quick early goal and
then quit working. Credit Arkansas State with tying the score late, but we did
not play the aggressive style of defense we normally do. We did not play smart
or with an aggressive attack and it hurt us today.”
Arkansas State (3-7-1, 0-3-1 Sun Belt) wouldn't
give in. The Red Wolves battled back and scored the equalizing goal following a
missed Warhawk clearance on a cornerkick. Michele Clark connected with Anna
Kaloghirou who powered it home from the top of the box in the 85th
minute.
With the match moving to overtime, neither
team was able to mount a sustained attack. The two extra periods expired with
the score still locked at 1-1.
Junior Mallory George went the distance in
goal, allowing only the one goal and adding five saves to her season total. The
Centennial, Colo., native moved into second place all-time in the Sun Belt
Conference in saves and sits only one shy of becoming the second player in ULM
history with 300-plus stops.
The Warhawks will look to break back into the win
column on Friday when they host Florida Atlantic (1-8-1, 0-3-1 Sun Belt) at 4
p.m. in the first game of the annual ULM Parents' Weekend. ULM will close the
weekend on Sunday at 12 p.m. against Florida International (0-10-1, 0-3-1 Sun
Belt).
