Late Heroics Lift ULM Past Troy 31-30

Football

MONROE, La.?ULM backup quarterback Trey Revell threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to J.J. McCoy with 34 seconds left in the game to lift the Warhawks past Troy 31-30 Saturday night in Malone Stadium to knock the Trojans from the ranks of the unbeaten in Sun Belt Conference play.

Revell, in the game in place of an injured Kinsmon Lancaster, rushed for 29 yards on the drive and went 4-for-4 passing for 41 yards.  He finished the game 5-for-5 for 44 yards.

Troy returned the ensuing kickoff to its 49-yard line and a five-yard ULM penalty pushed the ball across midfield to the Warhawk 46-yard line.

Levi Brown completed 1-of-3 attempts on the drive to set up a Sam Glusman 56-yard field goal attempt to win the game.  The kick, which caught the entire stadium off guard, bounced off the crossbar and fell just short to preserve the Warhawk victory.

The game was a wild back-and-forth affair that featured seven lead changes, five of which came in the final 19 minutes of the game.

After the Trojans (5-3, 4-1 Sun Belt) rattled off 17 unanswered points to close out the first half, ULM (3-6, 2-3) stormed back with a pair of Lancaster touchdown passes.  He struck first on a five-yard pass to tight end Mitch Doyle and then found running back Frank Goodin from 13-yards out ? the senior signal caller now has 34 career touchdown passes, fourth best in school history.

Lancaster was 15-for-26 for 125 yards before suffering an injury around the 10-minute mark of the fourth quarter.

This was ULM's third game this season decided by one point.  The Warhawks suffered heartbreaking losses to Arkansas (28-27) and Florida Atlantic (29-28).

DuJuan Harris broke off a 45-yard touchdown run in the waning minutes of the third quarter to give the Trojans a 24-22 advantage.

The Warhawks came right back down the field and regained the lead on a career-long 48-yard field goal by Radi Jabour.

After each team failed to score on their next possession, Troy marched the ball 84 yards on nine plays to take a 30-25 lead on a Brown 29-yard touchdown pass to Harris.  Brown's two-point conversion attempt was intercepted by Greg James leaving the margin at five and setting up Revell's heroics.

The Warhawks begin a three-game road swing to end the season next Saturday at Middle Tennessee in conference action.

On the play of Trey Revell

Trey is a great competitor. He got in there and was ready to go when his number was called. It was terrible to lose Kinsmon, but we were just mad at the way he went out. Trey stepped in there and he was ready to roll. He just put it on his back and there was no reason why we wouldn't sit there and protect him. He ended up pulling it out.

On getting the win

We have had so many games come down to the closing seconds. Against Middle Tennessee last year we were up big and lost in the last seconds. We just tried to keep everybody focused. He almost made it. Everybody was just holding their breath, but he didn't. It is great to win one like that.

On getting the win

It shows that our team has a lot of fight in it. Things haven't gone the way we wanted them to this year. We never let up. With turnovers we kept battling back. Our team is a good team.

ULM junior Cardia Jackson

On getting the win

We are happy for this win. Troy has a good team and at 4-0 were leading the conference. Coach always talks about it being a game of inches and you can see with the ball hitting the bottom of the goalposts that is what it is.

On the missed Troy field goal

It was a good kick, but it still fell our way.

ULM kicker Radi Jabour

On his career-long field goal

We won by one point tonight ? one field goal ? and that is the difference in the game. Last week we lost by one point. I guess I got my job done tonight, but that was tonight. Tomorrow is another day. I just have to go back and keep working on it and hopefully make every single one. That is my goal.

ULM sophomore Trey Revell

On having to go into the game

That is the role of the backup quarterback throughout the nation. You have to step in and lead your team. Kinsmon is a strong leader on the team and a great ball player. I just had to step in and do my best and pick up where he left off. Carry on where he left off.

On the last drive

Our players made great plays. Zeek's catch over the middle ? he went out for it. There was no doubt he was going to catch that ball. J.J.'s catch on the goalline was a great catch. He put it in with a great effort. It was just a great effort and a great finish tonight.

On the touchdown pass

Working with the two's this week we ran that play a lot. It is kind of funny that it came down to that because I was ready. The linebacker lined up inside of our slot receiver so I knew I was going to go out there quick. J.J. was ready and he put it in for us. It is just a great feeling right now to make things come together like they did.

ULM junior J.J. McCoy

On the win

It felt good. We needed that win. We have had a lot of games that came down to a few points. We have a good team and everybody knows Troy has a good team. We finally got that close win.

On the play of Trey Revell

Trey has been there before. He has stepped up for us before, both last year and this year. He is ready for that. I think he did pretty well.

ULM head coach Charlie Weatherbie

On the game

Last week we talked about how amazing a one-point win can make you feel. This week it went our way. I am excited for our football team. I thought they fought the whole game and never gave up. I am very impressed how we came out in the second half, drove the field and scored. This game was one that our guys refused to lose. They were going to find a way to win and they won this game for the last home game of the seniors. It was a great team victory for us.

On the performance of Trey Revell

He was 5-for-5 throwing the football. It is pretty nice to have your backup come in and throw the ball like that. Trey said he has been watching Kinsmon for a couple of years and has learned as the backup. He has really come a long way. Kinsmon has helped him and Jonas has helped. There is no doubt that he is preparing himself to be ?the guy.'

Troy junior Danny Franks

On the missed field goal

I thought it was over. I really thought it was through there, but obviously it wasn't. You can't blame him because it is a team effort. He really put a foot to it and I think it surprised everyone that he even got it near it. I was really expecting more yards out of the offense at the end.

On the game

Obviously we were in the red zone many times and didn't put the ball in. We had chance after chance and just didn't take advantage of it.

Troy head coach Larry Blakeney

On attempting the field goal

I've seen him kick some pretty long kicks and he just didn't kick well tonight. He certainly got every bit of that one tonight and it was just outside the maximum of his leg. With five seconds, either one wins and you are trying to win the game. I thought that gave us the best chance. I knew he hit it good enough to be close.

On ULM

They are a good football team, offensively especially ? even when they put 12 in the game. He is a good player. They did the things they had to do. We probably didn't do everything perfectly.

On the game

I thought it was going to be a dog fight. I picked these guys one or two in the summer. I thought they were a good football team and they have had a bunch of injuries themselves. Most of them were on defense I think.
