Sophomore Sannisha Williams and the ULM women's basketball team left little doubt
in the second half against rival Louisiana-Lafayette. After trailing at the break,
the Warhawks pulled away for an 81-70 win Sunday afternoon in the Cajundome in
Lafayette, La.
Williams dominated on both ends of the court,
scoring a career-high 18 points and pulling down a career-high 18 rebounds for
the first double-double of her career. The Ruston, La., native finished 4-for-4
in the second half with 10 boards.
“Sannisha had a great game for us,” ULM head
coach Mona Martin said. “She really stepped up for her teammates today. I
thought she set the tone for us in the second half and really finished with the
ball. I'm really proud of her performance on both ends of the court.”
The Warhawks opened the game on a 6-0, but
the Ragin' Cajuns scored the next eight points as part of a 22-6 run. With just
under nine minutes remaining in the opening period, ULL (2-10, 0-2 Sun Belt)
led 22-12.
ULM made short work of the early deficit. The
Warhawks scored the next 11 points to stake a one-point lead with 5:31
remaining.
Both squads traded advantages down the
stretch of the first half with Louisiana-Lafayette getting a jumper by Mercedes
Johnson for a 35-33 lead at the intermission.
In the second half it was all Warhawks. ULM
blew out of the gates on an 11-4 run and never looked back. Louisiana-Lafayette
would pull to within one point as late as the 13:03 mark, but the Warhawks
continued to press their offensive advantage.
ULM connected on 59.4 percent of its shots in
the second half. Behind Williams' career-high performance, the Warhawks enjoyed
a sizable advantage on the glass and finished with a 42-25 advantage.
Senior Lottie Moore provided the running mate
for Williams and scored 18 points. Junior Jesse Carrier also topped double
figures with 10 while freshman Sumar Leslie added 12 points and seven assists.
Leslie finished with only one turnover in the game.
Alexis Green finished with a game-high 32
points for the Ragin' Cajuns. The 5-8 post went 4-for-4 behind the arc in the
closing minutes.
ULM steps out of conference action on
December 28 when it hosts SIU-Edwardsville in a 2 p.m. game inside Fant-Ewing
Coliseum.
