BEAUMONT, TEXAS --- Brittney Williams scored a game-high 21 points to lead Lamar to a 73-67 victory over visiting ULM Saturday in the Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas.

 

“We looked tired and sluggish today,” ULM head coach Mona Martin said. “I wasn't pleased with our effort at all. Our posts had no answer for Williams.”

 

Williams also added four rebounds and two assists for the Lady Cardinals (5-1). Nikki Williams added 17 points (10-10 on free throws) and nine rebounds while Ang Green chipped in 12 points.

 

Three Warhawks (4-3) scored in double-figures led by Ashley Wallis' 14 points. Lottie Moore and Sumar Leslie scored 13 and 12 points, respectively. Moore also added eight rebounds, four assists and four steals.

 

Wallis and Moore connected on the game's first two buckets to give ULM a 4-0 lead one minute into the game. Lamar answered with a 4-0 run of its own to tie the contest at four apiece with 16:50 on the clock.

 

Moore drained a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession to break the tie and give ULM the lead, 7-4. The Warhawks maintained the lead for most of the first half before a 3:44 scoring drought allowed Lamar to take the lead, 25-20, with just over four minutes remaining before the break.

 

The Lady Cardinals took a 34-31 advantage into the locker rooms. Wallis led the Warhawks at the half with eight points, while Leslie came in off the bench to score seven points of her own. Brittany Williams led Lamar at the break with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting. 

 

A 13-6 run to start the second half propelled Lamar to a 47-39 lead in the first 4:41 of the second period.

 

Throughout the second half ULM cut the deficit to four points, but Lamar answered with numerous 6-0 scoring runs to maintain its lead throughout the remainder of the game.

 

Lamar held the lead for the entire second half.  The Lady Cardinals led by as many as 10 points, 64-54, with 6:38 to play and by as little as three points, 54-51, with 10:12 to play.

 

ULM returns home for a non-conference game with Northwestern State Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
