MONROE, La. ? The Warhawks softball team picked up a strong performance in the circle but couldn't find the offensive touch in a 5-1 loss against Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday night at the ULM Softball Complex.
“Aside from the mistake pitch in the seventh inning I thought Shanna threw a great game for us,” ULM softball head coach Rosemary Holloway-Hill said. “She was throwing strikes and got out of jams early. She kept us in the game, but one mistake late cost her and we just couldn't overcome it.”
Senior Shanna Swillie (0-1) gave the Warhawks a chance early, limiting the high-powered Southeastern Louisiana line-up to two runs while scattering seven hits through the first six innings.
After retiring the side in order to open the game the Warhawks had a chance to draw first blood in the bottom of the first frame, placing runners on first and second with only one out. Back-to-back short fly balls helped Rachel Ray (8-3) escape the inning.
Southeastern Louisiana (17-6) picked up three straight hits to open the second inning to grab a 1-0 lead. Swillie settled in and retired the next three.
The Lady Lions added a second run for the 2-0 lead after a leadoff hit in the third inning came around to score.
The ULM (7-14) defense held Southeastern Louisiana in check until the Lady Lions' Brooke Lockhart hit a two-out pitch with runners on second and third over the left center field wall for the 5-0 lead.
The Warhawks would avoid the shutout after freshman Brianna Love scored a two-out single to drive home freshman Brittany Brasell.
ULM returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Jackson, Miss. for a make-up doubleheader against Jackson State starting at 5 p.m.
