Louisiana-Lafayette Takes Advantage of ULM Miscues Winning Series Opener 12-10

Baseball
LAFAYETTE, La.?Louisiana-Lafayette scored six unearned runs taking the Sun Belt series opener from visiting ULM 12-10 Friday night at Tigue Field.

After ULM (20-12, 12-4 Sun Belt) had scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game at 10-10, ULL put two across in the bottom of the inning to preserve its ninth-straight victory over the Warhawks.

Following a strike out to lead off the inning, Matt Goulas reached on an error by ULM closer Derek Ward. Chance Harst was the beneficiary of a hit and run putting a ball where Warhawk second baseman Kyle Suire would have been if he has not gone to cover second base on the steal.

With runners now on first and third, Nolan Gisclair lined a ball to deep center field which was dropped by ULM center fielder A.J. Siggers but ruled a triple and cleared the bases.

Siggers provided the key hit in ULM's half of the eighth with a single through the right side of the infield scoring a pair. Ryan McMillan tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left, but the inning ended with Siggers getting thrown out at second.

The Ragin' Cajuns (17-15, 8-8) took advantage of uncharacteristically poor defense by the Warhawks, who committed six errors on the night. ULM entered the weekend third in the Sun Belt in fielding percentage.

ULL jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first with two of the runs coming unearned.

The Warhawks charged back and took a 5-3 lead with three runs in the second and two in the third.

The Cajuns came right back with four runs in the bottom of the third thanks to three Warhawk errors in the inning.

Jon Prevost tied the game in ULM's half of the sixth inning with a double down the line in left field scoring Matt Laird and Suire, but was thrown out at third trying to extend it into a triple.

Just like they had done all game, ULL answered the Warhawks runs this time with a solo home run by William Long in the bottom of the inning.

Ward (3-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season allowing the pair of unearned runs on two hits in the ninth. Starter Jared Jennings allowed eight runs ? just four earned ? on nine hits through 5.2 innings of work. The senior southpaw struck out five and walked just two.

The Warhawks roughed up Louisiana-Lafayette starter Hunter Moody for six runs on eight hits in five innings of work. Moody entered the game leading the Sun Belt with a 2.39 ERA.

Buddy Glass threw the final 3.1 innings for the Cajuns and picked up the win allowing three runs on two hits ? he walked four and struck out six.

ULM will look to even the series tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. and try and avoid its first Sun Belt series loss of the season.
