MONROE, La.?Jared Jennings threw a complete game and
Nick Maragas drove in a career-high five runs lifting ULM
to a 7-1 victory over UALR for its fifth straight victory in the first game of
a Sun Belt doubleheader Saturday at Warhawk Field.
Jennings (3-2) came within three outs of recording the
Warhawks (19-8, 11-2 Sun Belt) first complete game shutout in nearly four
years, but a solo home run by Eric Hanlon to lead off the ninth inning ended
the shutout bid.
The senior southpaw struck out six batters and walked just
two in his fourth quality start of the season in six tries.
ULM jumped out
to a 5-0 lead after the first three innings on the strength on Maragas' second
home run of the season. His three-run shot to left field plated A.J. Siggers
and Ryan McMillan, who led off the second inning with back-to-back singles.
Matt
Collins plated the Warhawks fourth run of the game with a double to left
scoring Siggers and Maragas returned the favor blasting a double off the wall
in left center.
Siggers
was a perfect 3-for-3 from the dish, while Jon Prevost, Maragas and McMillan
each recorded a pair of hits.
The
lead swelled to 7-0 with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Kyle
Suire singled home Jordy Poche in the sixth and Maragas tallied his final RBI
of the night with a sacrifice fly in the seventh scoring Siggers.
Hanlon
and Nick DeSanctis led the Trojans (6-20, 2-9) each going 3-for-4 from the
plate. David Klumpp (1-6) took the loss allowing six runs on 11 hits in
5.1 innings.
The
teams conclude the second game of the Saturday doubleheader at 6:10 p.m.
