Poche Pitches ULM Past Northwestern State 8-1

NATCHITOCHES, La.?Freshman Jordy Poche was magnificent on the mound tossing eight innings allowing just one run as ULM cruised past Northwestern State 8-1 Wednesday night at Brown-Stroud Field.

Kyle Suire moved into a tie for second place on the ULM (30-15) single-season home run list with his 15th of the season ? a solo blast to lead off the third inning. Ryan McMillan hit a three-run homer ? his sixth of the year ? in the fifth stretching the lead out to 7-0.

Matt Collins put the Warhawks up 2-0 in the top of the second with a double to right field scoring Dexter Fontenot and A.J. Siggers. Nick Wade pushed the lead out to 3-0 bringing home Collins with a grounder to third. Collins was the lone Warhawk with multiple hits finishing the game with a pair of doubles.

Poche improved to 2-0 on the season striking out six and yielding just five hits. Making just his fourth start of the season, Poche came within three outs of becoming the first ULM freshman to toss a complete game since Kyle Smith in 2005.

Fontenot pushed the final run across in the top of the ninth for the Warhawks reaching on another Northwestern State (24-20) error.

Derek Ward tossed a perfect ninth inning for ULM striking out a pair. Clayton Cooper (5-3) took the loss for the Demons allowing three runs on three hits in just two innings of work.

Mike Jaworski led Northwestern State going 3-for-4 from the plate with a pair of doubles.

The Sun Belt leading Warhawks return to conference action this weekend traveling to Mobile, Ala., for a three-game set against South Alabama beginning Friday night at 6:00 p.m. Saturday's game will be televised live on CSS at 3:00 p.m. and the series wraps up on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
