MONROE, La.?Thanks
to its state-of-the-art playing field, the ULM football team was able to
practice under normal conditions at Malone Stadium on Tuesday afternoon after
the Monroe area received nearly five inches of rain in the past two days.
ULM installed
ProPlay turf in Malone Stadium prior to last season and the field can drain
water at a rate of 10 inches per hour. It
was the second straight practice for the Warhawks in the rain, as it stormed
during the first of two sessions on Monday.
“This field is
awesome in this kind of weather,” ULM head coach Charlie Weatherbie said. “It is unbelievable at soaking up the
water. You can come out here and not
slip around and that is a real advantage in our preparations.”
The rain lifted
after the first hour of practice as the Warhawks moved from special teams work
to one-on-one situations.
The Warhawks
spent the final 90 minutes of practice working on team drills, including
redzone situations.
“I think it is
great to work the different zones of the field,” Weatherbie said. “The defense knows its back is against the
wall when they are in the redzone and they have to step up and make great plays
to keep the offense from scoring, and they did that well today.”
The Warhawks
return to the practice field tomorrow at 8:45 a.m. for the first of two
practices on the day. Following the
morning session, the Warhawks will take part in drills at 6:45 p.m.
ULM opens the
season on Aug. 30 at No. 11 Auburn in Jordan-Hare Stadium at 6:00 p.m. The game will be televised on pay-per-view in
Louisiana and Alabama ? contact your local cable or satellite provider to order
the game.
