Volleyball Drops Pair in Opening Round of CenturyTel Premier Tournament
SAN
MARCOS, Texas --- The ULM volleyball team faced tough competition Friday on day
one of the CenturyTel Premier Tournament in San Marcos, Texas. The Warhawks
dropped the opener to host Texas State 3-0 (25-7, 25-13, 25-19) and fell 3-0 (25-13,
25-17, 25-10) to Texas-Pan American in the second match of the day.
In
the season opener against Texas State, the Warhawks started slowly as they
could not contain the Cougars frontline which forced 19 Warhawk attacking
errors. As the match progressed, the Warhawks steadily improved as they led midway
through both the second and third sets.
Freshman Helen Theisen ran the Warhawk offense dishing out 12 assists, while senior
Johanna Spreen and freshman Michelle Messing paced the ULM offense attack smashing
four kills each.
“At
times today we struggled against our competition,” head coach John Schmidt
said. “It is important for our team to learn to be patient as a unit while
playing. If we can learn from our mistakes and correct them we will steadily
grow.”
The
ULM attack improved in the match against UTPA led by junior Mari ONeal's seven
kills. Messing once again had a strong performance
in her first day of competition as a collegiate athlete with four kills.
During
the second set of the match, the Warhawks trailed by only one point, 14-13,
before an 11-4 run put the Broncos up two sets.
The
Warhawks finish the tournament tomorrow with a 1:30 p.m. match against Miami
(Fla.) followed by a 5 p.m. match against Sacramento State.
