Fitterer and Payne Tally to Lead ULM Over UALR

Soccer
MONROE, La. - Junior forward Ashleigh Fitterer and junior defender Megan Payne each scored their first goal of the season to lead the ULM women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over UALR at the ULM Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon (Oct. 2). Freshman Alex Holland and senior Mallory George combined to earn a shutout in goal for the Warhawks.

ULM opened the scoring in the 43rd minute as Fitterer scored the second goal of her collegiate career. ULM drew a free kick 35 yards from goal, Payne dropped the free kick inside the box near the penalty spot where Fitterer pounced on the loose ball and tucked it into the corner of the net to give the Warhawks a 1-0 advantage.

The ULM goal came after both sides had their share of chances in the opening 45 minutes. Junior midfielder Amy Porch came close for the Warhawks with a shot from well outside the box that nearly found the upper corner of the net in the 16th minute and sophomore midfielder Kelly Browne flashed a header just high off a corner kick in the 23rd minute.

UALR's Christina Veasley rang a shot off the crossbar in the 33rd minute in the closest effort for the Trojans in the opening half. The teams were even with eight shots each in the first stanza.

Following the intermission, the Warhawks doubled their advantage when Payne caught the UALR goalkeeper off her line and dipped a shot into the far post from 35 yards out. The goal was Payne's third career tally at ULM.

With 20 minutes to play, the Trojans had their best chance of the half as Taylor Gabbert forced George, who had come on for an injured Holland in goal, into a pair of saves in quick succession. George was up to the task on both efforts to help preserve ULM's second shutout of the season. The shutout was also ULM's first Sun Belt shutout since Oct. 14, 2007, when the Warhawks defeated Florida Atlantic, 1-0.

Holland finished the match with five saves in 55 minutes of play while George made three stops in the final 35 minutes of the contest.

The Warhawks will return to action on Sunday (Oct. 4) when they host Arkansas State. Game time for the contest against the Red Wolves is scheduled for 1 p.m., at the ULM Soccer Complex.
