Late Defensive Stand Gives ULM 16-10 Victory Over Arkansas State

Football
MONROE, La. – ULM overcame Arkansas State and the elements with a 16-10 victory on Tuesday night at Malone Stadium. Junior running back Frank Goodin ran for 97 yards on 27 carries with a touchdown. With the win, ULM improves to 4-2, 3-0 in conference, marking just the second time in school history that the Warhawks have won their first three Sun Belt contests.

With 4:49 to play in the contest, the Red Wolves took over on their own 20-yard line trailing by six. Arkansas State (1-4, 0-2) moved the ball down to the ULM 20, but that would be as close as they would get to the end zone. An illegal participation penalty backed the Red Wolves up to the Warhawk 25-yard line before back-to-back sacks by sophomore defensive end Troy Evans pushed ASU back to the ULM 43. Facing a 4th-and-33 with 30 seconds remaining, Arkansas State's desperation hail mary fell incomplete and the Warhawks held on for the win.

Despite a driving rainstorm that lasted through most of the first half, ULM took the lead through the air just 56 seconds into the contest as junior quarterback Trey Revell found senior wide receiver LaGregory Sapp over the top of the Arkansas State defense for a 48-yard touchdown pass on the second play from scrimmage. The play was the third-longest of the season for the Warhawks and the second-longest scoring play.

Following a pair of punts by both teams, ULM forced a turnover deep in Arkansas State territory. ASU quarterback Corey Leonard lost control of the football and the ball was recovered by ULM senior defense tackle Aaron Williams on the Arkansas State 9-yard line.

The Warhawks cashed in on the turnover with a 20-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Radi Jabour to increase the ULM lead to 10-0 with 1:45 to play in the first quarter.

The ULM defense held Arkansas State to -9 yards on 11 plays in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter with ULM knocking on the door again, Revell was intercepted in the end zone by Kelcie McCray. Revell also injured his hand on the play and did not return; he finished the contest 3-of-8 through the air for 83 yards with a touchdown and an interception and gained nine yards on four rushes.

The Warhawks increased their lead further when they converted another Arkansas State turnover into points. Sophomore defensive back Nate Brown intercepted a Leonard pass to setup ULM on its own 47-yard line with 6:49 to play in the second quarter. On a 3rd-and-9, redshirt freshman backup quarterback Cody Wells hit sophomore wide receiver Luther Ambrose for a 39-yard completion to the Arkansas State 1-yard line. On 1st-and-goal, Goodin leaped over the pile to for a touchdown, Jabour's extra-point kick was blocked. The Warhawks took the 16-0 lead into halftime.

Arkansas State scored of the first possession of the second half, marching 61 yards in 10 plays, using 4:02. Leonard hooked up with Brandon Thompkins from 14 yards out for the score.

After a pair of punts by ULM, sandwiched around a punt by Arkansas State, the Red Wolves cut the Warhawk lead to six on a 49-yard field goal by Ryan Wilbourne. The Red Wolves moved the ball to the ULM 24-yard line before penalties backed ASU up to the ULM 32-yard line. Wilbourne then converted the field goal to trim the ULM lead to 16-10 with 2:32 to play in the third quarter.

On its first drive of the fourth quarter, ULM drove 77 yards in 17 plays, using 8:45, but came up empty on the drive as a 25-yard field goal attempt by Jabour hit the left upright.

The missed field goal setup Arkansas State's dramatic final drive that was stymied by the pair of sacks by Evans.

Wells finished the game 5-of-9 for 67 yards in relief of Revell, Leonard ended the night 20-of-39 for 234 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

The Warhawks will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 24) when they travel to Kentucky to tangle with the Wildcats. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m., and the contest will be televised live by Fox Sports Net.

ARKANSAS STATE POSTGAME QUOTES

Arkansas State Head Coach Steve Roberts

Opening statement ... "Very disappointed, very disappointed. We didn't play anywhere near as close to what we are capable of playing tonight and that is my fault. I apologize on behalf of our team for our showing tonight, the lack of focus, the lack of discipline, the lack of effort. Well, the effort was pretty good, but the lack of overall playing good football tonight ... terrible."

On the offensive struggles in the first half ... "The plays were there, they did a good job at the line of scrimmage taking away the run. I felt like we had a good plan to counteract that but we didn't make plays. The plays were there, we just didn't make plays."

Senior quarterback Cory Leonard

On the first half ... "We just didn't make enough plays. It's a tough place to play; we knew that we were at their place the whole game. They made plays when they needed to and we didn't. I feel like we set an NCAA record for penalties in a game, I don't know what it was but you can't play that way and expect to win."

On the turnovers ... "You can't use the environment as an excuse. All I can say is that it was lack of executing on my part, two fumbles, two picks, losing one of the fumbles, you can't play like that if you want to win the game and I didn't play well enough."

Senior running back Reggie Arnold

On the struggles running the ball ... "ULM is one or two in defensive rushing, so give them credit, they are a good football club. They are going to stop the run, we weren't able to do it (run the ball), because they are a good team. Not nothing that we did, they are just a good team."

On the mental mistakes ... "We did not play characteristic of ourselves. We had some things go wrong early in the first half and in the second half we started storming out, getting some plays made but the focus wasn't there at time when it needed to be there. We had a large lack of focus and that led to us losing this ballgame."

ULM POSTGAME QUTOES

Head Coach Charlie Weatherbie

OPENING STATEMENT

"I tell you that was a great team victory. I just thank the Lord for the victory and give him the honor, credit, and glory. It was a great defensive stand there in the fourth quarter. I am a little bit disappointed in our kicking. We shouldn't have missed a field goal or extra point and gotten one blocked. We need to look at that and correct that field goal. We need to make that field goal when we get the opportunity to make it a two score game. I believe we will make those adjustments and continue to improve there.

Offensively it was tough in the second half and we didn't score. I though Cody [Wells] did a good job of managing the game. We drove the ball well and ran the ball well down there in the fourth quarter with about four minutes left to go and with us ahead by two scores. I was impressed with us taking care of the football in the second half. The first half we threw an interception and it didn't cost us anything. We were fortunate there when we threw it in the end zone. I believe Trey [Revell] threw that with his thumb beat up pretty good and he didn't have a whole lot of power on it.

We are just looking forward to a week off now. We'll come back in here and clean this up tomorrow and get a little chance to have a practice Thursday and have weights on Friday. I'll give them Friday and Saturday off and we'll come back on Sunday and start preparing for Kentucky.

Arkansas State has got a fine football team and a very good football team. I am impressed with how hard they fought and they believed they were going to find a way to win the game in the fourth quarter and so did we. We were blessed to come out with the victory and I think we can draw from these close games that we have won. We can draw from this and can help us continue in that direction through the remainder of the season. There will be two or three more of these that the offense or defense has to score.

Linebacker Cardia Jackson

AS A CAPTAIN WHAT DID YOU TELL GUYS DURING ARKANSAS STATE'S LAST DRIVE
"I told those guys 'don't give up big plays and make sure to wrap up and let the second man come in and strip the ball.' I told them not to give up big plays. "

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE 3-0 IN CONFERENCE
"I have never felt that before [being 3-0 in conference] and ever since I have been here we have been 1-0 or 0-1. Like Coach Weatherbie said we take it step-by-step and try to build up our confidence as each game goes. "

PLAYING IN FRONT OF A NATIONALLY TELEVISED CROWD
"When you say ESPN2, that is enough. There is isn't anything more to say. We go out and play hard like we usually do."

Defensive End Troy Evans

SACKS ON LAST DRIVE
"The coach got us out there on the edge and told us go after them with all we have. I tried to use my best pass rushing move and get after him and by the grace of God and my teammates I got there."

WHAT IS MISSING FROM THE TEAM TO CONTEND FOR A CHAMPIONSIP
"We are going to continue to work hard and continue to do the things to we can to get better every week. We can't get too complacent, so we are going to continue to go out there and work hard."
