Missed Opportunities Cost ULM Soccer Against Middle Tennessee

Soccer
MONROE, La. - Sophomore midfielder Kelly Browne scored her team-high-tying third goal of the season but the ULM women's soccer team fell to Middle Tennessee, 6-1, on Friday afternoon (Oct. 16) at the NELSA Soccer Complex.

The Warhawks (2-10-2, 1-5) enjoyed the bulk of the possession in the first 45 minutes, outshooting Middle Tennessee, 11-8. Despite the edge in possession, the Blue Raiders (11-3-1, 5-2-0) held a 3-1 lead at the intermission as they were able convert their chances.

ULM had a trio of chances in the 12th minute as freshman midfielder Kylie McIntyre forced a save by the Middle Tennessee goalkeeper, senior midfielder Britnie Markham had her follow-up shot blocked and junior defender Megan Payne fired the third opportunity high over the goal.

Regina Thomas opened the scoring for Middle Tennessee in the 19th minute as she picked up a loose ball inside the ULM box and fired low past freshman goalkeeper Alex Holland.

Redshirt freshman forward Mindi Giroir nearly tied the contest less than two minutes later as her shot when just over the crossbar following a corner kick by junior forward Tiffany Bombard.

Shan Jones doubled the Blue Raiders' advantage in the 24th minute as she broke in alone on the ULM goal. Jones fired a shot from the edge of the 18-yard box that Holland did well to save, but Jones remained in alone on goal and put the rebound past Holland.

Browne cut the Middle Tennessee lead in half at 31:04 with a rocket from the edge of the area. Junior midfielder Amy Porch dribbled outside the area on the right side before Browne picked up a deflected ball and fired a shot with her second touch into the top of the net past the Middle Tennessee goalkeeper.

In the 36th minute, the Blue Raiders regained a two-goal lead as Vanessa Mueggler scored off the left post.

Five minutes into the second half, senior defender Raydan Phillips nearly brought the Warhawks back within a goal as she had her shot cleared off the goal line by a Middle Tennessee defender.

Late in the contest, the Blue Raiders were able to find their way past the ULM defense. Mueggler scored in the 79th and 82nd minutes to finish off her three-goal outing and Jones finished the scoring with an 88th minute tally.

The Blue Raiders outshot ULM 17-6 in the second half. Browne finished the game with six shots for the Warhawks while Holland made eight saves in goal for ULM.

The Warhawks will return to action on Sunday (Oct. 18) when they host Western Kentucky. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m., and will be played at the NELSA Soccer Complex.
