MONROE, La.?The ULM softball
team scattered six hits in the first game of the 21st annual Mardi Gras Classic
as Southeast Missouri State took the contest 4-1 Friday night at the ULM
Softball Complex.
The Warhawks committed two
errors when the score was knotted at, 1-1, in the top of the fifth inning which allowed what turned out to be the
game-winning run to score.
Melissa Rivera and Sarah Carriger each had a pair of
hits to lead the ULM offense. Brianna Love put in a solid
day defensively recording three outfield assists, including two in the seventh
inning that kept the game within reach heading into the bottom half of the
inning.
Southeast Missouri State (2-0)
grabbed the lead in the top of the third inning when Alex Ramirez slapped an
RBI-single to center field. ULM (2-3) got on the board when Love drove
in Michelle Farrell-Fink on a sacrifice fly to right field to even the score,
1-1, in the bottom of the third inning.
The Redhawks took the lead
back in the top of the fifth inning when Elise Sperakos scored on an RBI-single
from Giana Zimmerman. Love drew a walk in the bottom of the fifth inning, but
was doubled off when the Redhawks' catcher caught a bunt attempt by Sarah
Carriger.
Southeast Missouri State
tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning, and ULM
could not make the comeback in the bottom of the inning.
The Warhawks will be back in
action tomorrow with a pair of games when the 21st annual Mardi Gras Classic
continues. ULM opens with Central Arkansas at 12:30 p.m. and then plays SEMO at
3 p.m. Centenary and Central Arkansas open play on Saturday morning at 10:30
a.m. at the ULM Softball Complex.
