Golden Hurricane Nips Warhawks 3-1

Softball
TULSA, Okla. ? Kailey Yarmer hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning as the ULM softball team fell to regionally-ranked Tulsa, 3-1, in the first game of the Tulsa Select Festival Friday evening.

After the first three innings went scoreless the Warhawks (3-8) scored on an RBI-double from Michelle Farrell-Fink in the top of the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Golden Hurricane (8-2) got all of its runs on Yarmer's round-tripper in the fifth inning to steal the victory from ULM.

Kandace Causey (1-4) walked seven batters, but she did record eight strike outs and pitched five scoreless innings in the loss. Jackie Lawrence (5-0) picked up the victory for Tulsa, striking out 11 batters and allowed just two hits.

“We had a great game against Tulsa,” head coach Rosemary Holloway-Hill said. “We were in control of the game until the fifth inning. Tulsa is an excellent team and I'm not pleased that we lost, but we played great.”

The Warhawks were solid defensively, committing zero errors for the third-consecutive game. Farrell-Fink continued to swing a hot bat by batting 2-for-3 and driving in ULM's run with her double. She is now batting .320 on the season with four RBI.

Causey was almost out of the jam in the bottom of the fifth inning when she got Christian Timmons to pop up to shortstop Jessica Olguin for the second out. Yarmer ended the Warhawks' hopes of getting out of the inning with what turned out to be the game-winning long-ball in the next at bat.

The Warhawks will be back in action tomorrow against South Dakota State at 2 p.m. The original schedule of the tournament was changed due to weather concerns and ULM will now play Creighton and St. Louis on Sunday.
