MOBILE, Ala. ? South Alabama used a late
second-half run and defensive pressure to defeat the ULM women's basketball
team 63-48 Saturday afternoon inside the Mitchell Center. The Warhawks loss
dropped their road record to 1-8 in conference play.
South Alabama's defense proved to be the
deciding factor as it held ULM to six field goals and 23.1 percent in the
second frame for the victory. The Warhawks scored only seven points over the
final 7:20 of the contest.
The Lady Jaguars took control of the contest
with six free throws and a pair of 3-pointers during a 15-3 run over a 4:40 span
to push its lead to 57-43 at the three minute mark. During the run the Warhawks
shot 0-for-8 from the field.
Lottie Moore led ULM (13-14, 6-10) with a game
and season-high 23 points along with seven rebounds and three assists. Jesse
Carrier chipped in six points and tied a career-high with seven rebounds.
South Alabama (19-9, 10-7) was led by Jessica
Starling's 19 points including 5-of-6 from outside the arc. Ra'Shawna Sippio
and Morriah Smith added 15 and 14 points, respectively. Shaniece Brunner
grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds for the Lady Jaguars.
Moore stole a pass and went coast-to-coast
for a layup and foul to end a six-plus minute Warhawk scoring drought near the
end of the opening period. She also made the free throw for her 10th point to
give ULM a 22-20 lead at halftime.
Both teams exchanged buckets for the first 12
minutes of the second half as there were five lead changes and six scoring ties
in the contest before ULM went cold from the field.
ULM returns home this coming week for a pair
of Sun Belt Conference games to close out the regular season. On Wednesday it
welcomes Denver to Monroe for a 7 p.m. tip and then on Saturday it hosts Arkansas
State on Senior Day at 4:30 p.m. inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
