ULM Softball Beats Louisiana Tech ? Loses to No. 24 Baylor in QTI Invitational

Softball
WACO, Texas ? After pounding out a season-high 14 hits in a 7-5 win against Louisiana Tech, the ULM softball team was blanked by No. 24 Baylor, 8-0, in five innings at the QTI Invitational hosted by Baylor on Friday afternoon.

Led by Molly McNeill's three-run home run in the third inning, the Warhawks (6-12) defeated Louisana Tech (6-6) in the first game of the tournament Friday morning. Kandace Causey (W, 3-5) went the distance for her sixth complete game of the season.

In ULM's second contest of the day, Baylor (13-3) scored early and often as it led, 7-0, after the first three innings. The Bears added one more in the fourth inning to seal the victory in run-rule fashion. ULM managed just three hits in the game as Whitney Canion (W, 7-2) picked up the victory for Baylor.

McNeill moved into a tie for ninth on the all-time ULM home run list with her seventh-career long ball, and Causey moved to within one victory of ranking in ULM's top 10 in wins with the 19th of her career. Megan Miller moved into sixth place on ULM's all-time RBI list as she drove in the 69th and 70th runs of her career against Louisiana Tech.

The Lady Techsters quickly jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second inning, but the Warhawks scored six runs on seven hits in the top of the third inning to take a commanding 7-3 lead. Krissi Oliver (L, 2-6) took the loss for Louisiana Tech after ULM forced her out of the game in the third frame.

Sarah Carriger and Michelle Farrell-Fink were strong with their bats all game, as each recorded three hits in the contest. Carriger also scored two runs and stole her sixth base of the season in the win for the Warhawks.

Louisiana Tech rallied to put two runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Causey got Kylie Bassett to pop up to shortstop Jessica Olguin with two runners on base to end the threat. ULM held the Lady Techsters scoreless in the bottom of the seventh inning to seal the victory.

"We really did well to score as many runs as we did in the third inning," head coach Rosemary Holloway-Hill said. "With their lineup, that game really was not over until the last pitch."

Against Baylor in the afternoon game, ULM starter Jessica Chastka (L, 2-3) was called for an illegal pitch four times in the first inning as the Bears led 3-0 after the opening frame. Bree Hanafin scored on an illegal pitch in the second inning before Kayce Walker drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to give Baylor a 5-0 lead.

The Bears added two more runs in the top of the third inning and another in the fourth on an RBI-single from Brette Reagan. Deianna Russell, Brianna Love, and Megan Miller all recorded hits for the Warhawks, but it wasn't enough as Baylor won in five innings.

ULM will be back in action tomorrow when it takes on Louisiana Tech at 10 a.m. with its game against Rutgers set to immediately follow the first game.
