ULM Softball Drops Saturday Contests to Louisiana Tech and Rutgers

Softball
WACO, Texas ? The ULM softball team dropped a pair of games at the QTI Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Getterman Stadium. Louisiana Tech beat the Warhawks 8-0 in five innings, while a late run for Rutgers pushed the Scarlet Knights past ULM 4-3.

Louisiana Tech (8-6) got a complete-game effort from Meghan Krieg (W, 5-1) who received plenty of run support early from the Lady Techsters' offense. Amberly Waits and Jessica Kirby each hit two-run home runs in the first inning as Louisiana Tech seized control from the get go.

The Lady Techsters added three insurance runs in the top of the third inning, two of which came on an RBI-single from Summer Young. Kylie Bassett drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to seal the run-rule victory for Louisiana Tech.

ULM (6-14) was handcuffed by Krieg all game, only recording a pair of hits. One came from Megan Miller and the other from Roxane Cassel. The Warhawks had a pair of runners on in the third inning, but couldn't get any runs home after Melissa Rivera lined into a double play.

In the second contest, Rutgers (2-5) jumped out to a two-run lead in the first inning when Amanda Heller blasted a two-run homer to right center field. ULM got a run back in the bottom of the third inning when Cassel scored on a groundout to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Mandy Craig drove in the third run with her double in the fifth inning to give the Scarlet Knights a two-run lead. The Warhawks responded with a pair of runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by Michelle Farrell-Fink's RBI-single to tie the game at three.

Rutgers was patient at the plate in the seventh inning as the game-winning run scored when Mikelyn Messina drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Scarlet Knights ahead for good. Nicole Lindley (W, 1-2) got three straight outs in the bottom of the frame to secure the victory.

The Warhawks will be back in action tomorrow in a noon matchup with No. 24 Baylor to conclude the QTI Invitational.
