ULM Softball Falls to No. 24 Baylor 10-3

Softball
WACO, Texas ? Baylor pounded out 17 hits as the ULM softball team fell to the nationally-ranked Bears, 10-3, Sunday afternoon in the final game of the QTI Invitational at Getterman Stadium.

Michelle Farrell-Fink and Brianna Love were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts on the weekend. Love hit .500 with three extra-base hits and Farrell Fink drove in two runs to go with her .286 batting average for the tournament.

Megan Miller moved into fourth on the all-time ULM home run list with her solo shot in the second inning. However, Baylor (17-3) was too much to overcome for the Warhawks (6-15), scoring in every inning except the second.

ULM tied the game at two runs apiece in the second inning when Farrell-Fink drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Love was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two triples, a double, and two runs scored.

Roxane Cassel continued to be productive at the plate at the QTI Invitational as she drove in a run with her single through the right side to knot the score at 3-3 in the top of the fourth inning. Baylor then seized control of the game in the bottom of the frame when Brette Reagan smacked a three-run home run to left center field.

“It was an even game until the fourth inning,” head coach Rosemary Holloway-Hill said. “Then we gave up an error and a home run. I feel good about going into conference play from an offensive standpoint because the bottom of the order has been productive for us. We have learned some things about ourselves in these first 21 games that will help us in conference play.”

The Bears would add one more run in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth as they got their 17th win of the season. Brittany Turner (W, 3-0) pitched five innings while recording seven strikeouts and only giving up one run in the victory.

ULM will be back in action March 7 as it starts Sun Belt Conference play in a three-game series at North Texas.
