DENTON, Texas ? Head coach
Rosemary Holloway-Hill earned her 700th collegiate coaching victory
as the ULM softball team defeated North Texas Sunday afternoon at Lovelace
Stadium in Sun Belt Conference action.
ULM (8-16, 2-1 Sun Belt) was
led by Brianna Love as she went 2-for-3 with a home run and a single. Kandace
Causey (W, 5-7) moved into a tie for seventh on ULM's all-time wins list with
the 21st of her career. North Texas (12-10, 1-2 Sun Belt) got a home
run from Caitlin Grimes, but it wasn't quite enough as the Warhawks took the
rubber game 5-4.
Love led off the game with
her second home run in as many days to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead after the
top of the first inning. The Mean Green took the lead when Grimes smacked a
three-run homer to right field in the bottom of the second inning.
North Texas had runners at
second and third with nobody out in the third frame, but Causey got two outs on
pop-ups to shortstop Jessica Olguin. After a walk to load the bases, Causey
then got Rebecca Waters to strike out swinging to get out of the jam with no
runs scored.
The Warhawks plated four
runs in the top of the fifth inning after Megan Miller was hit by a pitch with
the bases loaded and Molly McNeill followed with a two-run single up the middle.
Elyse Stark then scored on an error to give ULM a 5-3 lead.
Rebecca Waters homered in
the bottom of the sixth inning to pull North Texas back to within a one-run
margin at 5-4. Heather Fritz came in to relieve Causey and earned her first
career save.
ULM will be back in action
on Wednesday in Nacogdoches, Texas when it takes on Stephen F. Austin in a
doubleheader before continuing Sun Belt Conference Play at Troy next weekend.
