HAMMOND, La. ? The ULM
softball team outhit Southeastern Louisiana, 5-3, but dropped the 3-1 decision
to its in-state rival Wednesday evening at North Oak Park in Hammond, La.
ULM (13-20) got on the board
first in the third inning when Brianna Love smacked an RBI-single to left field
to score Robin Biddle. Southeastern Louisiana (14-19) responded quickly,
scoring two runs in the bottom of the third frame on a double from Heather
Sherrill to take a 2-1 lead after having two runners reach base via getting hit
by a pitch.
Allyson McCubbins homered in
the bottom of the fourth inning to extend the Lions' lead to 3-1. The Warhawks
threatened to rally when they had two runners on base and only one out in the
top of the seventh inning, but Catherine Gunther shut the door on the rally as
Southeastern Louisiana took the 3-1 decision.
ULM gave itself chances as
nobody struck out in the contest, but could only manage to push across one run
on five hits. Gunther was tough on Warhawk hitters all game, as she went the
distance for the victory. While she didn't record a strikeout, she stranded
seven ULM base runners and only gave up one run.
“We didn't execute with people
in scoring position,” head coach Rosemary Holloway-Hill said. “We didn't adjust
to their pitching, and our offense needs to give our pitchers more runs to work
with. We just didn't compete like we normally do today.”
The Warhawks will be back in
action this weekend at the ULM Softball Complex when they continue Sun Belt
Conference play against South Alabama in a doubleheader on Saturday at 4 p.m.
