ULM Softball Swept in Doubleheader by No. 22 Louisiana-Lafayette

Softball
MONROE, La. ? The ULM softball team fell to No. 22 Louisiana-Lafayette in the first game of the doubleheader, 9-1, and dropped the second contest, 8-0, via the run-rule Saturday afternoon at the ULM Softball Complex.

The Warhawks (16-33, 7-15 Sun Belt) clinched the eighth seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament thanks to a pair of wins from Western Kentucky against Middle Tennessee. ULM now knows it will play ULL in the conference tournament on Wednesday in a game scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Denton, Texas.

Donna Bourgeois (W, 26-7) fanned 12 batters while giving up just one run on two hits as she was tough on the Warhawk bats all game in the first contest.  Brianna Love hit her seventh home run of the season and moved into sole possession of sixth place on the all time list at ULM with the 17th of her career, but it wasn't enough as ULL took the first game, 9-1.

The Ragin' Cajuns (38-10, 18-5 Sun Belt) were led by Codi Runyan as she went 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBI in the contest.

Errors cost the Warhawks three runs early in the second contest as ULL led the whole way. The Ragin' Cajuns went on to take the second game 8-0 in run-rule fashion. Lana Bowers led the ULL offense as she went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI. Brittany Cuevas (W, 6-1) gave up just one hit in a complete-game shutout.

Love got the Warhawks on the board first with her long ball in the bottom of the third inning of the first game. It was just the fourth home run Bourgeois had given up all season. The Ragin' Cajuns quickly responded with three runs in the top of the fourth frame, highlighted by a two-run home run from Gabrielle Bridges.

ULL added another run in the top of the fifth frame on an RBI-single from Karli Hubbard to push its lead to 4-1. The Ragin' Cajuns would add two more runs in the sixth inning and three in the seventh frame, as they cruised to the 9-1 victory.

ULL grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the second game when Vallie Gaspard scored on a wild pitch. After a pair of unearned runs scored in the second inning, ULL plated three runs in the top of the third frame to grab a 6-0 lead. Bridges and Christi Orgeron smacked back-to-back home runs in the inning.

Two more runs would score for the Ragin' Cajuns in the fourth frame as they cruised to the 8-0 victory.

The Warhawks will be back in action tomorrow at noon in their regular season finale. Seniors Erica Darden and Megan Miller will be honored before the game.
