ULM Softball Eliminated from Sun Belt Tournament in 9-1 Setback

Softball
DENTON, Texas ? Playing in wind gusts of over 30 miles-per-hour, the ULM softball team was eliminated from the Sun Belt Conference Tournament with a 9-1 loss to No. 22 Louisiana-Lafayette Friday morning at Lovelace Stadium in Denton, Texas.

Louisiana-Lafayette (40-11) led, 7-1, after the first inning and nobody scored again until the Ragin' Cajuns plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a double from Codi Runyan to win in run-rule walk-off fashion.

Brittany Cuevas (W, 7-1) was tough on the Warhawk bats all game as she struck out 12 batters and gave up just one run on five hits in the complete-game victory. Brianna Love led ULM (17-35) as she went 2-for-2 with a triple and a run scored, but it wasn't enough as Louisiana-Lafayette eliminated the Warhawks from the tournament.

Love led off the game with a triple and then stole home on a missed squeeze bunt to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Ragin' Cajuns quickly responded with seven runs in the bottom of the frame to lead 7-1 as the wind affected several balls hit in the air. Gabrielle Bridges cleared the bases with a three-run double in the frame.

Kandace Causey (L, 11-19) sat down nine-consecutive batters from the third inning into the fifth, but Louisiana-Lafayette plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on Runyan's double to take the 9-1 decision.

“I'm proud of the effort from our kids in this tournament,” head coach Rosemary Holloway-Hill said. “It was a great experience for our kids to beat a top-seeded team like Louisiana-Lafayette in the first game. That gave them the type of championship experience they will need in the future. I'm disappointed in the loss today, but this is a young group and we will be back as a strong team next year.”
