MONROE, La. – ULM women's basketball head
coach Mona Martin announced Tuesday the hiring of Amber Magner as an assistant coach
for the Warhawks. The appointment is pending final approval by the University
of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors.
A former standout basketball player at New
Orleans, Magner brings 15 years of coaching experience, including seven years
as the head coach at California State University-Monterey Bay. Previous to her brief stint
as an intern within the Alaska Anchorage athletic department, Magner led CSUMB
through the transition from a NAIA program to a Division II member.
“Amber is going to be a great asset to our
program,” Martin said. “She brings a wealth of coaching knowledge and
recruiting experience with her from her previous coaching positions.”
In addition to her experience as a head coach
at CSUMB, Magner also served as an assistant coach at Furman University for three
seasons. She also brings 10-plus years of experience coaching, directing, and
designing basketball camps across the country.
She began her playing career at Loyola
Marymount before transferring to New Orleans to finish her career. During her
time with the Privateers, Magner earned a Louisiana All-Academic Scholar
Athlete Award and was named to the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner's
All-Academic Team three times.
“I see her fitting in nicely with our program
because of the familiarity with the area,” Martin said. “Amber has been in many
situations where a lot of responsibility was given to her and that will help
our coaching staff greatly.”
Magner earned both her bachelor's degree in
business and master's degree in sports management from New Orleans. She
replaces former co-associate head coach Robert Dallimore who was named
associate head coach at UALR over the summer.
ULM returns four starters and a total of 13
letterwinners from last season's squad which reached the quarterfinals of the Sun
Belt Conference Tournament.
