NATCHITOCHES, La.-Chelsey
Gibbs scored two goals and Northwestern State used an early second half outburst
to defeat ULM 5-0 Friday night at the NSU Soccer Complex.
The Warhawks encountered transportation
issues on their way to Natchitoches and didn't arrive at the field until 30
minutes prior to the original start time. Game officials pushed the start of
the match back 35 minutes, but ULM was not able to get a full warm up in.
The Demons (3-0) broke through
in the 20th minute as Gibbs netted her first goal of the
night taking advantage of a ULM turnover deep in its own end of the field.
Gibbs beat one Warhawk defender and slipped the ball past Mallory George for
the score.
ULM (1-1) was not able to get
a shot on goal in the first half despite outshooting the Demons 5-3. For the
game, NSU held a 13-8 advantage in shots and a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Northwestern State was whistled for nine offside calls during the match.
Northwestern State didn't
waste much time putting the contest out of reach in the second half scoring twice
in the 48th minute. Megan Hunter beat the ULM offside trap and found
a wide open Kayla King in front of the goal. Gibbs scored her second goal of
the night 28 seconds later to extend the NSU lead out to 3-0.
Megan Husson scored in the 69th minute and Maddy Hall scored in the 82nd minute for the Demons. With the shutout, Northwestern
State has not allowed a goal through three games this season.
The Warhawks wrap up their
three-match road trip next weekend at the Tulsa Invitational Tournament. ULM
opens the event against Oral Roberts on Friday at 7 p.m. before closing the
weekend on Sunday at 5 p.m. against Tulsa.
