MONROE, La.-Southeastern
Louisiana scored two late first-half goals to defeat ULM 2-0 at the ULM Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon as heavy rains wreaked havoc on the match.
The Warhawks held Southeastern
without a shot for the first 33 minutes of the contest before the Lions finally
put a ball on net. They took advantage of the opportunity as Gloria Burkhart
beat ULM keeper Mallory George from 18 yards out off a pass from Lauren
Stillians for her first goal of the season.
Just over five minutes later,
Karly Dagys beat George off an assist from Candice Wallace for her third goal
of the season.
The Warhawks (1-4) outshot
Southeastern (3-2) 9-8 for the match, but the Lions put five of their eight
shots on goal compared to three by the Warhawks.
The weather cooperated for
most of the first half with just a light drizzle, however heavy rains moved
into the area during halftime and throughout the second half.
Play was allowed to continue
in the second half despite large pools of water forming on the field. With field conditions finally becoming unplayable, the referees called the match with 7:48 to
play.
Lindsey Tubbs and Britnie
Markham each fired two shots to lead the Warhawks, while Amy Porch, Christian
Moreno and Tubbs all put a shot on net. Dagys led the Lions with three shots,
two on net, while Natalie Santana and Gloria Burkhart each had two shots.
The Warhawks travel to Conway,
Ark., on Wednesday for a matchup with Central Arkansas before returning home
for a pair of home contests next weekend against McNeese State and Centenary.
