McNeese State Defeats ULM Soccer, 2-1

Soccer
MONROE, La. – Despite scoring the opening goal of the contest and taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, the ULM women's soccer team fell to McNeese State, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at ULM Soccer Complex. Senior midfielder Britnie Markham scored for the Warhawks and senior goalkeeper Mallory George made four saves in goal.

ULM opened the scoring in the 11th minute as sophomore forward Lindsey Tubbs took the ball off a throw-in and crossed in from the right side to Markham who took one touch and buried the ball into the back of the net to give the Warhawks the early lead. The goal was Markham's second of the season.

McNeese State had a couple of chances in the first 45 minutes but the ULM defense held the Cowgirls off the score sheet as the Warhawks took a 1-0 advantage into the intermission. The two clubs were tied with four shots each in the opening stanza.

The rain picked up in the second half and the Cowgirls quickly went on the attack. McNeese State leveled the contest on a shot from the top of the box by Alana Clark. Kaitlin Tue fed a pass from the left-hand side to Clark who fired home the equalizer in the 62nd minute. McNeese State then took the lead ten minutes later as Lindsey Zwahr scored directly off a free kick from 25 yards out to give the Cowgirls a 2-1 advantage.

As the second half progressed, the rain intensified, making it difficult for either team to maintain possession of the ball. Despite the difficult conditions, the Warhawks came close to leveling the match late on as Tiffany Bombard took a shot that narrowly missed the goal to the left with just over a minute to play. Bombard led the Warhawks with four shots in the contest.

McNeese State outshot ULM 10-5 in the second half and 14-9 for the contest.

The Warhawks will return to action on Sunday as they host Centenary at the ULM Soccer Complex. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
