MONROE, La. - The Arkansas State volleyball team
served 14 aces on Sunday afternoon as they claimed a 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-19)
Sun Belt match over ULM inside the ULM Activity Center.
Arkansas State (12-5, 2-1) served six aces in
both the second and third sets, to go along with a .281 attacking percentage. Cayla
Fielder smashed 13 kills and finished with an impressive .647 attacking
percent. Taylor Coughlin also chipped in 10 kills, while Laura Bennett assisted
on a match-high 37 assists and Heather Bowman dug 17 balls and served a
match-high five kills.
Meghan McCoy tallied 19 assists to lead the ULM
(2-15, 0-3) offense, while Stephanie Wardach and Mari O'Neal each smashed six
kills. Lacey Dietlin paced the Warhawk defense with eight digs.
Fielder smashed a pair of kills to help
Arkansas State jump out to a 10-4 lead in the opening stanza. The Red Wolves were
able to extend their lead to double-digits, 18-8, behind an attacking
percentage of .370 in the set. Arkansas State also used a pair of service aces
to claim the first set 25-13.
The Red Wolves offense was on full display in
the second stanza as they served six aces and finished the set with a .333
attacking percentage. Bowman led the way in the set with a trio of service aces,
all of which came during one series of serving. The Red Wolves would claim the
set 25-14 and a 2-0 set match lead.
ULM and Arkansas State went back-and-forth to
begin the first portion of the third frame, three ties and two lead changes,
before the Red Wolves put together a 10-5 run. The Warhawks outscored the Red
Wolves 7-3 down the stretch, but it wasn't enough as Arkansas State claimed the
set 25-19 and match.
ULM finishes its non-conference schedule on
Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. against Jackson State in Jackson, Miss., before returning to Sun Belt action on Friday and Saturday.
