Men?s Basketball Hangs on Late to Defeat South Alabama

Men's Basketball
MONROE, La. – Senior guard Dynile Forbes scored a game-high 14 points as the ULM men's basketball team earned a 61-58 victory over South Alabama on Thrusday night (Jan. 14) at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Senior guard Jarvis Hill had 13 points and junior forward Lawrence Gilbert chipped in 11 points and a team-best seven rebounds.

ULM (7-11, 2-5 Sun Belt) led for the majority of the second half before a late run put South Alabama ahead by one with two minutes left in the contest. But the Warhawks scored the final four points of the game to earn a three-point victory, its first over the Jaguars since the 1975-76 season.

South Alabama (11-7, 3-3 Sun Belt) took control of the contest in the early going, holding an 18-14 after the first 12 minutes of the contest. Gilbert kept the Warhawks close, scoring 11 of ULM's first 14 points, including draining a trio of trifectas.

Following the under-eight minute media timeout, the Warhawks used a 13-3 run to take a 27-21 lead with five minutes to play in the opening half. Freshman guard Colby Carr started the burst for ULM with an old-fashioned three-point play; he also closed the spurt with a layup. Senior guard Tony Hooper added a pair of three-pointers during the ULM run.

ULM took a six-point lead into the break, 31-25. Gilbert led ULM with 11 points and four rebounds in the opening 20 miuntes. Javier Carter had seven points to lead the Jaguars in the first half.

The ULM lead swung between nine and four points for the first 11-plus minutes of the second half until Hill knocked down a triple with 8:11 remaining in the half to push the Warhawk lead to double-digits, 52-42.

The Warhawks led by nine, 57-48, with six minutes to play when South Alabama went on a 10-0 to take its first lead of the second half, 58-57, with 1:59 remaining in the contest.

Junior forward Tommie Sykes ended the Jaguars run with a pair of free throws on the next possession, giving ULM a 59-58 advantage with 1:37 to play.

The Warhawks got a pair of defensive stops, sandwiched around a turnover of their own, before Forbes was fouled with 15 seconds remaining. Forbes calmly drained both free throws to put ULM ahead by three, 61-58. South Alabama got a look at a three-pointer from in front of their own bench at the buzzer, but the shot fell short and the Warhawks hung on for the victory.

Martino Brock scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to lead South Alabama.

The Warhawks will return to action on Saturday (Jan. 16) when they host Denver at 1 p.m., at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The contest against the Pioneers will be broadcast live on the Sun Belt Network, available in Monroe on CSS.
