TROY, Ala. - The ULM women's basketball team made
a furious second half comeback after it found itself down by as many as 21
points in the first half, but it was Troy who claimed a 65-52
conference victory on Wednesday inside Trojan Arena.
Jesse Carrier drained a jumper off an inbounds play to end
an impressive Warhawk 26-12 scoring run. The bucket tied the game at 47-47 with
6:23 remaining in the game, but the Warhawks could get no closer as Troy took control the
rest of the way.
Carrier paced ULM
(8-13, 2-9) with 16 points, including two triples, while Elizabeth Torres
finished with eight points. Sannisha Williams concluded the game with six
points and a game-high-tying 12 rebounds.
Troy (11-8, 4-6) was led by Brittnie
Davis who scored a game-high 25 points, including four 3-pointers and a
7-for-10 performance at the charity stripe. Donnette McNair tallied the game's
only double-double, 15 points and 12 rebounds.
For the second game in a row the Warhawks dominated on the
boards, outrebounding Troy
50-36, while grabbing 20 offensive boards on the night. As the rebounding
numbers were impressive, ULM shot 16-of-62 (25.8
percent) from the floor, while Troy
finished 21-of-50 (42 percent) from the floor.
The Trojans forced the Warhawks into 16 turnovers and
converted those errors into 22 points. Troy
also held a 16-8 advantage in paint scoring.
Troy jumped out to a 7-0 advantage at
the first media timeout after ULM
began the contest 0-for-3 from the floor, to go along with four turnovers.
Davis drained her second 3-pointer of the
game and gave Troy a 20-5 lead, forcing ULM into a timeout. At
the time, the Warhawks were 2-for-11 from the field and committed seven
turnovers.
Troy led by as many as 21 point with 3:58 remaining in the
opening period before ULM made a furious comeback with a 10-3 scoring run to
end the half. The Trojans eventually took a 35-21 lead into the locker room at
the break after Tenia Manuel drained a 3-pointer from the right corner.
Davis led Troy at the intermission with 11 points,
including three 3-pointers. Carrier paced ULM
with six points. The Trojans shot 46.2 percent from the floor and drained
7-of-11 triples, while the Warhawks managed only 20 percent and couldn't find a
long ball to fall. In addition, Troy scored 15
points off 11 ULM
turnovers.
Torres banked in a 3-pointer from the left wing and the
Warhawks charged out of the gates in the second half with a 20-7 scoring run to
cut the deficit to one, 42-41, with 10:52 remaining in the game. During the run
Carrier nailed a pair of triples, to go along with Torres long ball.
Carrier sank a 10-foot jumper off an inbounds screen to tie
the contest at 47-47. The Trojans answered with an 8-0 scoring run that
included a 3-pointer by Sarah McAppion and Davis, along with a pair of three
throws, to extend their lead back to 53-47 with 4:37 remaining in the game.
ULM will return home on Saturday for a
2 p.m. matchup against Louisiana-Lafayette inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The game
will be the first part of a doubleheader with the men's program.
