NEW ORLEANS - ULM cornerback
Robert Nelson has been named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the
Week for his performance in the Warhawks' dramatic 35-30 come-from-behind
victory at Western Kentucky this past Saturday, the league office announced
Monday.
Nelson capped the Warhawks
17-point fourth quarter comeback with a 55-yard interception return for a
touchdown with 90 seconds to play in the game to give ULM a 35-24 advantage. It
was the 19th longest interception return in ULM history and the 14th
longest for a touchdown. The score came two minutes after Jyruss Edwards gave
the Warhawks the lead with a 6-yard touchdown run - ULM entered the fourth
quarter trailing 24-7.
The sophomore from Suwanee,
Ga., finished the game with three tackles and helped the Warhawk secondary hold
the Hilltoppers to just 164 yards in the air. Nelson ranks 10th in
the Sun Belt in passes defended, 14th in tackles for loss and 22nd
in tackles.
Nelson's touchdown gave the
Warhawks 28 points in the fourth quarter which is tied for the most by an FBS
team this season. ULM's 17-point comeback is the largest fourth quarter rally
by an FBS team this season.
The Warhawks (3-3, 2-1 Sun
Belt), who have won three of their last four games, travel to Murfreesboro,
Tenn., on Saturday for a battle with preseason Sun Belt favorite Middle Tennessee (2-4, 1-1).
The game is scheduled to kick off at 3:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on
ESPN3.
