MONROE, La. - Alex Hermeling,
the 17th-best player in the state of Illinois according to Perfect
Game, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball at ULM beginning with
the 2012 season, ULM head coach Jeff Schexnaider announced Friday.
"Alex is a 6-foot-5
right-handed pitcher who is very projectable," Schexnaider said. "He throws the
ball with some velocity now and should only continue to improve over the years. He should be able to come in and log some
innings early in his career."
Perfect Game, which is considered the largest
and most comprehensive baseball scouting service, also ranked Hermeling as the
nation's 481st best player and named the Northbrook, Ill., native to
its 2009 Underclass All-America Team.
Hermeling, who preps at Glenbrook North (Ill.)
High School, struck out 17 batters and allowed just one hit in an 8-1 victory
over rival Niles West last season.
He joins James Connally (RHP), Christopher
Dudley (OF), Joshua Faciane (SS) and Justin Stawychny (OF) as ULM's signees
during the early signing period.
