MONROE,
La. - The ULM women's basketball team smothered New Orleans 97-30 in its season
opener on Friday evening inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
The
67-point win was the largest margin of victory in school history. ULM also set
a school record by limiting New Orleans to 30 points. The previous low came in
a 94-33 victory against North Texas on Feb. 26, 1985.
ULM
forced 35 New Orleans turnovers and scored 51 points off those turnovers. The
Warhawks owned a 66-8 advantage in the paint.
The
Warhawks (1-0) had five players score in double figures and were led by senior
forward Sannisha Williams, who netted 15 points to go with five rebounds, three
steals and an assist in just 13 minutes. Junior center Larrie Williams added 12
points, three rebounds and a steal in 15 minutes of play.
Senior
guard Priscilla Mbiandja recorded 12 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Freshman center Ashleigh Simmons had 10 points and six rebounds and freshman
guard Jasmine Shaw tallied 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
ULM
shot 47.7 percent and outrebounded the Lady Privateers 55-19 for the game. New
Orleans (0-1), who is competing as a Division I Independent this season, was
led by Mirjam Sipos' nine points.
The
Warhawks scored the first 21 points of the game, capped by a jumper from
Simmons at the 14:08 mark of the first half. New Orleans got on the board on a
basket from Sipos at the 13:38 mark to break up the run.
ULM
countered with an18-1 run over 5 minutes, 30 seconds late in the first half to
grab a 43-6 lead at the 6:14 mark. Freshman guard Elexar Tugler gave the
Warhawks their biggest lead of the first half (54-12) on a layup with 53
seconds remaining in the half.
Mbiandja
paced ULM with 10 points and six rebounds as the Warhawks led 54-15 at the
break.
Sannisha
Williams fueled a 14-0 run for ULM with three consecutive layups early in the
second half. Freshman guard Shantrell Pierson capped the streak with a layup at
the 15:36 mark to give the Warhawks a 70-17 lead.
ULM
will face its first road test of the season at Nicholls State on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at
6:30 p.m.
