Carrier Ties Record but ULM Women Fall at Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. – Senior guard Jesse Carrier scored a team-high 21 points but the ULM women's basketball team suffered a 77-56 loss at Arkansas State on Monday night (Feb. 8). Carrier made three three-pointers in the contest, giving her 177 in her career, tying her for the ULM career three-point field goals made record with Mykayla Alewine.

Junior guard Priscilla Mbiandja added nine points and six rebounds for ULM while junior forward Sannisha Williams grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and scored six points.

The Warhawks (9-15, 3-11) shot just 25.7 percent (19-of-74) in the contest, struggling to convert second-chance opportunities despite grabbing 25 offensive rebounds, while Arkansas State went 26-of-56 (46.4 percent) from the floor.

Arkansas State (10-14, 5-8) got out to an early seven-point lead before a triple from Carrier cut the Red Wolves advantage to four, 16-12, with 11:41 to play in the first half.

But Arkansas State responded to the triple with a 10-0 run to take a 14-point lead, 26-12. The Red Wolves opened the contest 10-of-16 from the floor (62.5 percent) but ULM opened the contest just 6-of-24 (25.0 percent).

The Warhawks answered the Arkansas State run with a 9-0 run to cut the Red Wolves lead to 26-21 with just over four minutes to play before the intermission. Carrier claimed the first seven points of the burst for the Warhawks before Sannisha Williams made a basket to finish the run.

Arkansas State pushed its lead back to 10, 41-31, at the break. Carrier led all scorers with 15 points in the opening 20 minutes. Sherina Scott led Arkansas State with 10 points.

ULM forced 15 first half turnovers but shot just 26.3 percent (10-of-38) in the opening stanza. The Red Wolves shot 56.0 percent (14-of-25) in the first half and also held a 22-6 advantage in points in the paint.

After an old-fashioned three-point play from Mbiandja trimmed the Arkansas State advantage to nine, 47-38, the Red Wolves used a 13-2 burst to increase their lead to 16, 56-40, with 12 minutes to play in the second half. The Warhawks began the second half shooting just 4-of-18 (22.2 percent) from the floor.

The Warhawks continued to battle back, using an 8-0 run to cut the Arkansas State lead to 56-48 just past the midway point of the second half. Junior center Jordan Rawson ignited the burst with a pair of free throws before two baskets from Carrier and another from sophomore center Larrie Williams capped the run.

But the Red Wolves again had an answer, pushing their lead to 15, 67-52, with five minutes to play thanks to an 11-4 spurt. 

Scott finished the contest with a game-high 23 points for Arkansas State, she also grabbed eight rebounds.

ULM will return to action on Wednesday night (Feb. 10) when it travels to UALR for the final game of its two-game road trip. The contest against the Trojans is slated to tipoff at 7 p.m.
