New Orleans Defeats ULM to Force Rubber Game on Sunday

Baseball
MONROE, La.-New Orleans belted out 20 hits and rode the arm of Jim McGonigle to defeat ULM 12-2 Saturday afternoon at Warhawk Field to even the Sun Belt Conference series at one game each. The UNO victory snapped an eight-game win streak by the Warhawks over their in-state rivals.

McGonigle (2-0), who lowered his ERA to 2.38 on the season, allowed just two runs on four hits over seven innings of work. The Privateers were led at the plate by Jerad Comarda who was 4-for-5 with an RBI and Nick Schwaner who was 3-for-4 with four runs scored, four RBIs and an inside-the-park home run.

The Privateers (5-11, 1-4 Sun Belt) jumped out to a 7-0 lead after scoring one in the first, four in the fourth and two in the sixth. Comarda had a two-out double in the first and Schwaner's home run came with two outs and a 0-2 count in the fourth.

ULM (8-10, 2-3) loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth after Caleb Clowers led off the frame with a double, Nick Wade was hit by his second pitch of the game and Judd Edwards singled back up the middle. Josh Chappell drew a six-pitch walk to plate the Warhawks first run of the game and then Wade scored as Josh Gill grounded into a double play.

Clowers led the Warhawks at the dish going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Wade reached base all four times he was up after being hit by three pitches and picking up a single.

New Orleans answered the Warhawks runs and another in the top of the seventh to stake a 9-2 lead. Ryan Eden belted a two-run homer and Kevin Berry scored on a wild pitch. UNO added two more in the ninth to set the final margin.

Drew Granier (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season for the Warhawks as he lasted just 3.2 innings before giving way to the bullpen. He allowed five runs on 10 hits and struck out three.

The teams will play the rubber game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. at Warhawk Field. Junior right-hander Jordy Poche (1-1, 7.43 ERA) will get the start for the Warhawks and freshman right-hander Andrew Richardson (0-2, 8.53) is scheduled to toe the rubber for the Privateers.
