No. 22 Western Kentucky Wins Doubleheader Opener 10-0 over ULM

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-Kes Carter drove in three runs and Shane Cameron gave No. 22 Western Kentucky its second straight solid starting pitching performance as the Hilltoppers defeated ULM 10-0 in the first game of a Sun Belt doubleheader Saturday at Nick Denes Field.

WKU (19-5, 5-0 Sun Belt) spotted Cameron (3-1) a four-run lead after the first two innings and the senior right-hander worked 6.1 innings scoreless frames before handing the ball off to the bullpen. He scattered five hits and struck out a career-high eight batters to pick up his second straight victory.

Jared Hammond led the Warhawks (9-13, 3-5) with a career-high three hits in three at-bats. The game marked the first time that ULM had been shutout in a regular season Sun Belt Conference game and the first time since April 10, 2005, (Lamar) that the Warhawks had been shutout in a regular season conference game.

Following a leadoff walk and a strikeout in the bottom of the first, Carter lined the first of his two RBI doubles of the game off the base of the wall in left field. After another strikeout by Drew Granier, Monte Ketchum drove home Carter with double to left.

In the second, Matt Payton extended the WKU lead out to 3-0 with a double to center field to score Kory Petri. Blake Crabtree made it a 4-0 game as he scored on a grounder to short in the next at-bat. Carter's second double of the game came in the fifth inning to plate Jared Andreoli, who reached on a single to right.

WKU put the game out of reach with five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to stretch its lead out to the final 10-0 margin. Carter finished the game 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, while Andreoli was the only other Hilltopper to finish with multiple hits as he was 2-for-5.

Granier (2-2) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits over six innings of work. He finished the game with five strikeouts, including sitting down Matt Rice twice after he entered the game batting .412 and on a 14-game hit streak - Rice finished 0-for-4.

The second game of the doubleheader on Saturday is scheduled to start at 6:05 p.m.
