MONROE, La.-Florida
Atlantic
snapped a streak of five-straight one-run games with a 13-1 victory over
ULM in
the rubber game of a three-game Sun Belt Conference series Sunday at
Warhawk
Field. Nick Delguidice hit his third home run of the weekend - this one a
grand
slam in the fifth - to break the game open.
ULM starter Jordy
Poche baffled
the Owls through the first 2 2/3 innings striking out five Florida
Atlantic batters.
However, Andy Mee got the Florida Atlantic bats going with a two-out
triple in the
third. Following a walk to Dan Scheffler, Eddie Cassidy turned the tide
with a three-run homer
to left-center.
The Owls (25-15,
14-7 Sun
Belt) belted five home runs in the game and finished with 17 hits on the
afternoon. Sean Bukovich hit a pair of the homers and finished the game
4-for-4
with three RBIs. Mee finished with three hits while Nathan Pittman and
Anthony
Mesa had a pair of hits each.
Nick Wade put the
Warhawks (15-24,
5-13) on the board with his ninth home run of the season with two outs
in the
home half of the third inning.
The Owls erased any
hope of a
ULM comeback with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings wrapped
around a
four-run fifth. Pittman scored on an error in the fourth after leading
off the
inning with a single. Delguidice's grand slam came following a single
and a
pair of hit batters in the fifth and Scheffler hit his 12th
home run
of the season with one out in the sixth.
Bukovich's second
homer of the
day came following a leadoff single by Pittman in the seventh - the
two-run
shot gave the Owls an 11-run lead to enact the Sun Belt's Sunday 10-run
rule.
Scheffler added an RBI single to right-center later in the inning.
Bukovich put
the Owls on the board with a solo homer in the second.
R.J. Alvarez (3-1)
was solid
for the Owls on the mound allowing just the solo homer to Wade. He
struck out
five and walked one while scattering five hits in six innings of work to
pick
up the win.
Poche (3-4) took
the loss for
the Warhawks after he was charged with nine runs - eight earned - on
nine hits
in four innings of work. He finished with five strikeouts and a pair of
walks.
ULM begins a
six-day road trip
on Wednesday when it travels to Memphis, Tenn., for a makeup game with
the
Memphis Tigers at 6:30 p.m. The Warhawks then travel to Miami, Fla., for
three
league games at Florida International over the weekend before wrapping
up the
trip in New Orleans, La., on Tuesday at Tulane.
