MONROE, La. - The
ULM baseball
team ended its 2010 season with a 13-1 loss to ULL on Saturday evening
at
Warhawk Field. The Ragin' Cajuns took a four-run lead into the seventh
inning and
then added nine late runs to make the score more lopsided then the game
actually played out on the field.
Head coach Jeff
Schexnaider
honored his 10 senior players in a ceremony prior to the game. The group
was responsible
for the best back-to-back seasons at ULM in almost 10 years which
included the
2008 Sun Belt Conference regular season championship and a berth in the
2009
Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship Game.
ULL (37-18, 21-9
Sun Belt) jumped
out to an early lead and rode the arm of junior left-hander Taylor
Hubbell to
complete the three-game sweep of the Warhawks. The last three meetings
between
the two schools at Warhawk Field have resulted in one team walking away
with a
sweep.
Nick Wade and Casey
Auttonberry both ended their ULM's careers with two hits in four
at-bats. Matt
Goulas, Jordan Poirrier and Greg Fontenot had three hits each for the
Cajuns.
Chad Keefer and
Tyler
Frederick led off the second inning with a triple and a double to give
the
Cajuns a 1-0 lead. Fontenot executed ULL's second squeeze bunt of the
weekend
to plate Frederick for a 2-0 advantage. Goulas hit a one-out homer in
the third
and Justin Robichaux led off the fourth with a homer to extend the lead
out to
4-0.
The Warhawks
(17-38, 7-23) had
a couple of runners in scoring position in the fifth inning and runners
on the
corners in the sixth, but Hubbell was able to work out of both jams
unharmed.
Goulas singled home
Kyle
Bostick and Poirrier singled home Goulas in the seventh inning to push
the
Cajun advantage out to 6-0. The Cajuns, who tied for the Sun Belt
regular
season championship with Florida Atlantic, pushed seven runs across the
plate
in the ninth inning.
Senior Boomer
Blanchard, who has
been out of the lineup since May 4 with an injury, was inserted in the
game as
a pinch runner for Caleb Clowers. A single by Judd Edwards moved up him
to
second base and then a throwing error by ULL pitcher Ryland Parker on a
fielder's
choice allowed Blanchard to score for the 108th time in his
two-year
career.
Hubbell (4-3) threw
six
scoreless innings to pick up the win for ULL. He walked two, struck out
two and
scattered five hits. Parker picked up his second save of the season with
three
innings out of the bullpen. He allowed one unearned run on one hit.
Josh Miller (1-6)
was charged
with the loss for the Warhawks. He allowed six runs on nine hits over
6.2
innings of work - he struck out two and didn't issue a walk. Five of
the six pitchers
that threw in the game the Warhawks were seniors - Matt Cawthon, Derek
Ward, Devin
Pourciau and Corey Brown all came out of the bullpen for their final
curtain call.
