MONROE,
La. - ULM freshman Ashley Moore scored a goal in her first collegiate game to
help the Warhawks hold off Central Arkansas 1-0 in the soccer season opener on
Friday at the ULM Soccer Complex.
With
the victory, the Warhawks (1-0) have won four straight season openers under
head coach Stacy Lamb. ULM used a strong defensive effort in the second half to
keep Central Arkansas off the board and post the shutout.
Moore,
a native of Highland Village, Texas, netted the only goal in the 30th minute on
an assist from senior midfielder Amy Porch that would serve as the game-winner.
Porch set up Moore for the wide-open goal after the UCA goalie mishandled a
cross from right corner.
The
goal was the first of Moore's career and the first time a freshman has scored
in the season-opener since Kelly Browne did so against Lamar in 2008.
Central
Arkansas had opportunities to tie the game in the second half, taking seven
shots, including three on goal in the period. For the game, UCA outshot the
Warhawks 10-8, while also having a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Sophomore
goalie Alex Holland registered the first shutout of her career with six saves.
UCA goalie Kelsey Gochnauer picked up two saves in the losing effort.
Senior
forward Tiffany Bombard led the way for ULM with four total shots, two that
were on goal. Cori Kaplinger came off the bench to lead Central Arkansas with
two shots on goal.
The
Warhawks have a week off before heading to Las Vegas, Nev., for the Las Vegas
Invitational Aug. 27-29. ULM will face off against Portland State on Friday
(Aug. 27) at 6:30 p.m. CT before wrapping up the tournament against host UNLV
on Sunday (Aug. 29) at 3 p.m. CT.
