Volleyball Falls to Northwestern State in First Match at the McNeese State Tournament

Volleyball
LAKE CHARLES, La. – The ULM volleyball team claimed a win in its first set against Northwestern State Friday evening, but were unable to hold off the Demons the following three sets as the Warhawks dropped their first match at the McNeese State Tournament, 3-1 (26-28, 25-12,25-21,25-9).

Senior outside hitter Stephanie Wardach led the offensive attack against the Warhawks notching a team-high 10 kills. Freshman outside hitter Blanca Ocana contributed eight kills on the night and middle blockers Marissa Davis and Mahogany Dilonga chipped in six kills apiece. Junior setter Meghan McCoy provided 24 assists, while senior libero Christy Tribble collected 27 digs.

Northwestern State's Kourtney Adams earned a double-double during the match, leading both teams in kills with 15 while providing 13 digs. Lauren Peltier also earned a double-double notching 26 assists and 11 digs while two other Demons also hit double-digits in digs as Sarah Gillis claimed 18 and Megan Manning 12.

Northwestern State (6-3) took a quick lead during the first set, going up 6-1 with kills by Adams and Spann and two errors by ULM (0-4). At that point the Warhawks began putting points up on the board, stymieing the Demons' offense by going on an 11-6 run. A service error evened the score 12-12, and a service ace by Dilonga put the Warhawks ahead for the first time. The score remained within two points during the rest of the stanza, ULM taking the advantage at 23-20 on an attack error by Northwestern State.  Northwestern State battled back to even the set, 25-25, before the Warhawks sealed the win with a service ace by Tribble and a final kill by Dilonga, ending the first set 28-26.

Both teams traded points early in the second set before Northwestern State slowly began to pull away. With Northwestern  State leading 10-6, three Warhawk errors and kills by Pelitier, Deering and Adams fueled a 6-3 scoring streak that put the Demons up 16-10.  ULM only managed two more kills for the remainder of the set as a series of errors provided Northwestern State a nine-point run, claiming the second stanza 25-12.

Starting much like the second set, ULM and Northwestern State battled back-and-forth during the third set before the Demons gained a four-point advantage, 13-9. The Warhawks stayed within striking distance, as kills by Ocana and Iren Marinova brought ULM within two, 15-13, and eventually resulted in a 9-6 streak that knotted the score 19-19. Another error by the Wildcats gave ULM its first lead of the stanza, 20-19, but they were unable to hold on and Northwestern State took the third set, 25-21.

After a kill by Wardach gave ULM the first point of the fourth set, Northwestern State went on an 11-0 run, fueled by three kills by Fruge and two kills by Adams to go up 11-1. A Demon error returned the ball to the Warhawks, but ULM could not capitalize on the opportunity and Northwestern State ran away with the final set, 25-9.

The Warhawks return to action tomorrow morning at the McNeese State Tournament when they go head-to-head with former Sun Belt Conference rival New Orleans at 10 a.m., followed by a face-off with tournament host McNeese State at 6 p.m.
