JONESBORO, Ark. – Fred Brown missed a 3-point attempt just inside the half court as Arkansas State held on for a 62-61 victory Thursday night inside the Convocation Center. Arkansas State's Martavius Adams hit a free throw with 6.8 seconds remaining to give the Red Wolves the one-point advantage.
Brown's attempt rattled around the rim but failed go through as the Warhawks lost by one point for the third time this season. Brown led ULM with 17 points, including 15 in the second half to keep the game close. Brown hit three 3-pointers and went 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Senior forward Lawrence Gilbert had 13 points, senior forward Tommie Sykes had 12 points and junior guard Hugh Mingo added 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Warhawks, who dropped to 6-16 overall, 1-7 in the Sun Belt.
Mingo knocked home a 3-pointer with 24 seconds remaining to tie the score at 61-all.
The Red Wolves (11-12, 5-4 SBC) took advantage of an intentional foul call to score four points and extend their lead to five at 61-56 with 2:04 remaining. Adams capped the run with a layup and led the Red Wolves with 21 points and seven rebounds. Trey Finn was the only other Arkansas State player in double figures in scoring with 10 points.
ULM shot 44.2 percent from the field and made 7-of-13 shots from 3-point range. Arkansas State tallied 50.0 percent shooting from the field.
The Warhawks went on a 14-2 run – spanning five minutes – to take a 49-44 advantage. Gilbert capped the run with a 3-pointer with 10:14 remaining. During the run, Arkansas State went scoreless for just under three minutes.
Brown hit a pair of 3-pointers and a deep jumper early in the second half as the Warhawks cut the Arkansas State lead to 36-35. Adams answered with a three-point play then Donald Boone knocked in a 3-pointer to give the Red Wolves a 42-35 advantage.
The Warhawks scored the final five points of the first half to get within 30-27 at the break. Mingo hit a 3-pointer followed by a pair of free throws from Brown with 2.8 seconds remaining. Brown stole the ensuing inbounds pass, but came up short on a 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have tied the game.
Arkansas State held its largest advantage of the half at 30-22 at the 1:14 mark on a layup from Edward Townsel.
