MONROE,
La. - Troy outlasted ULM 74-68 Saturday evening inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum
despite a second straight double-double from junior guard Hugh Mingo.
Mingo
had 18 points and 10 rebounds, including four 3-pointers on the night to lead
the way for the Warhawks. Mingo finished 7-of-15 from the field and 4-of-9 from
3-point range while also providing three steals to help the Warhawks battle
back from a 10-point second-half deficit.
The
Trojans (5-16, 3-6 SBC) took the lead for good on a pair of free throws from
Vernon Taylor with 1:25 remaining. Troy wrapped up the game with 12 consecutive
free throws down the stretch.
Will
Weathers led five Troy players in double figures with 18 points and seven
assists. Weathers finished 8-of-10 from the free-throw line. Travis Lee and
Shawntez Patterson each added 15 points and Vernon Taylor and Bernard Toombs
tallied 11 points apiece for the Trojans.
ULM (6-17,
1-8 SBC) led by as many as five points in the second half, but lost for the
fourth consecutive time in conference play. ULM outscored Troy 40-28 in the
paint and 27-7 off turnovers.
Junior
guard Fred Brown chipped in 15 of his 17 points in the second half, while
senior forwards Tommie Sykes and Lawrence Gilbert each had 10 points. Sykes
scored his final points of the night to tie the score for the final time at
64-all with 1:43 to play.
Mingo
scored seven straight points to give ULM its first lead of the second half at
55-53 with 7:38 remaining. The Warhawks extended the lead to five points on a
jumper from Brown with 4:20 remaining.
Lee hit
a pair of 3-pointers early in the second half to help the Trojans to a nine-point
advantage. His 3 with 16:00 remaining gave Troy a 43-34 lead. Shawntez
Patterson knocked home a 3-pointer on Troy's next possession to give the
Trojans their largest lead of the game at 46-36 with 15:24 to play.
ULM
scored used a 10-0 run to take an 18-13 advantage with 7:42 to play in the
opening half. During that stretch, the Warhawks held Troy scoreless for over
five minutes. Junior guard Marcelis Hansberry knocked in a jumper in the paint
to cap the scoring for ULM.
The
Trojans responded by scoring 11 straight points en route to a 31-22 advantage
with 2:11 to play in the half.
The
Warhawks hit the road for games at Middle Tennessee Feb. 3 at 7 p.m., and at
Western Kentucky Feb. 5 at 3:30 p.m.
