TROY,
Ala.
-- ULM scored 35-unanswered points in the second half to blow past
defending Sun Belt Conference champion Troy 38-10 Saturday night at
Veterans Memorial Stadium.
It was the
worst home loss in Troy head coach Larry Blakeney's career which dates back to
1991 and just the 13th home loss in his career (91-13-1). The
Warhawks outgained the Trojans 523-126 in the game, including a dominating
325-6 in the second half. ULM's 523 yards of total offense are the most in Todd
Berry's tenure as head coach.
ULM held
Troy to -14 yards rushing and forced three turnovers; the Warhawks have forced
seven turnovers in the past two games. It was the fewest rushing yards allowed
by the Warhawks since they held Grambling State to -4 yards in 2007.
ULM (2-4,
1-1 Sun Belt) quarterback Kolton Browning completed 23-of-31 attempts for 275
yards and three touchdowns, while Tavarese Maye caught seven passes for a
career-high 161 yards and a touchdown. Centarius Donald rushed for 112 yards
and a touchdown on 14 carries and Jyruss Edwards added 88 yards and a touchdown
on 19 carries.
After the
teams only mustered a field goal each in the opening half, Troy took a 10-3
lead following a ULM miscue on a punt return. That was the final positive of
the night for the Trojans (2-4, 1-2) as the Warhawks scored touchdowns on five
of their final six drives on the night.
Luther
Ambrose set the Warhawks up with outstanding field position on the ensuing
drive with a 37-yard kickoff return out to the ULM 42-yard line. Facing a 3rd-and-4,
Browning found a wide open Maye who picked up 49-yards on the reception thanks
in part to a devastating block by Anthony McCall.
Edwards
found the end zone two plays later to pull the Warhawks within one, 10-9.
However, ULM was not able to get the extra-point off and Cody Wells' pass was
batted down by the Trojans as he scrambled to make a play.
The Warhawk
defense held the Trojans to a three-and-out after a 39-yard kickoff return gave
them outstanding field position. Seven plays later Browning and Maye hooked up
for a 38-yard strike to give the Warhawks the lead for good.
Browning moved
into seventh place on the ULM career passing yardage list (3,595), seventh on
the ULM career total offense list (4,111), eighth on the career pass attempts
list (562) and eighth on the career touchdown passes list (24).
Mitchell
Bailey forced a fumble by Chandler Worthy on the ensuing kickoff and Brandon
Hardy recovered the loose ball on the Troy 17-yard line. Browning needed just
two plays to put more points on the board as he found Colby Harper in the end
zone on a fade route from 13-yards out -- it was the first career touchdown
reception for Harper.
Another
three-and-out by the ULM defense quickly gave the ball back to the offense.
Bailey was rewarded for his special teams work as he caught a 1-yard pass from
Browning for a touchdown on fourth-and-goal to stretch the lead to 29-10.
The game
continued to spiral out of control for the Trojans on their next possession. Another
three-and-out led to another Troy punt, however this time the ball sailed over
Will Goggins head and into the end zone for a safety. It was the first safety
allowed by Troy since 2008 against, ironically, ULM.
Isaiah Newsome
intercepted Corey Robinson late in the fourth quarter to set up ULM's final
score of the night. The Warhawks milked the clock with a 10-play drive -- all
on the ground -- capped by a 16-yard touchdown run by Donald.
ULM travels
to Denton, Texas, next Saturday to take on North Texas. Kickoff is scheduled
for 6 p.m.

Berry.
-The 28-point loss was
the largest margin of defeat for Troy at home under head coach Larry Blakeney
