Indiana State Pulls Away Late for 71-59 Victory Over ULM

Men's Basketball

MONROE, La. - Indiana State closed the game on a 13-5 run to defeat ULM 71-59 Monday night inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The game was the first of two this season between the two teams as ULM will make a return trip to Terre Haute, Ind. in December.

The defending Missouri Valley Tournament champions shot 45.0 percent from the field and knocked in eight 3-pointers to move to 2-0 on the season. ULM (0-2) countered by shooting 36.8 percent and going 9-of-19 from 3-point range to show dramatic improvement from Friday's season opener at Ole Miss.

Senior guard Fred Brown had season-highs of 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists to lead ULM, while sophomore guard Charles Winborne chipped in 12 points - all on 3-pointers -- for his first double-digit scoring output with the Warhawks.

The Warhawks were within one at 52-51 with 10:09 to play, but that is as close as they would get. Leading 58-54, Indiana State's Jordan Printy drained a 3-pointer from the right corner to kick-start the 13-5 run with 7:12 left in the game.  ISU's Dwayne Lathan, a Chatham, La. product, knocked home a pair of free throws to give the Sycamores their biggest lead of the night (71-57) with 1:28 remaining.

Winborne hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions, and senior guard Hugh Mingo added a layup as ULM cut the Indiana State lead to 50-48 with 11:14 remaining. ULM got to within one (52-51) on Winborne's fourth 3-pointer of the night. The Warhawks hit seven of their nine 3-pointers in the second half.

Indiana State hit seven of its first 13 shots, including three 3-pointers, to build an early 17-8 lead. Another 3 by Lucas Eitel gave the Sycamores a 20-10 advantage - its largest lead of the half - with 11:34 before the break. The Sycamores had a 34-26 lead at the break.

Carl Richard led Indiana State with 15 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Jake Odum and Printy with 13 points each. Lathan finished the night with nine points, five rebounds and two assists in his return to Louisiana.

The Warhawks travel to Knoxville, Tenn. Wednesday to face Tennessee at 6 p.m. CT inside Thompson Boling Arena.
